The hotel’s impossible architecture encodes repression; its Native American motifs mark the buried crime on which America was built; the Adler typewriter, numerical references to 1942, and bureaucratic repetitions open onto the machinery of the Holocaust and how its architects were integrated into the post-World War II military-industrial and intelligence complex of the United States. The horror hidden in Room 237 is the horror of the Moon itself. The Apollo program, shaped by Paperclip Nazis and occulted by intelligence secrecy, becomes inseparable from the suspicion that the Moon is not merely a natural satellite but an artifact, a stabilized threshold, perhaps even a camouflaged space station.

Whether approached through anomalous lunar science, suppressed astronaut testimony, or the alleged medical-channel communications of Apollo 11, the Moon emerges as the ultimate Overlook: luminous, silent, artificially constructed, and filled with a secret that official reason cannot assimilate. The Shining is not simply about madness, cinematic production, Apollo, genocide, or the Moon. It is about how illumination itself may become a means of illusionary concealment. In short, it is about the duality of Apollo – or as Kubrick puts it in Full Metal Jacket, “the duality of Man.”

Lycanthropic Apollo and Dionysian Ecstasy

If we are to think seriously about the genesis of the Apollonian, we must follow Carl A. P. Ruck into a darker terrain, one in which Apollo is not yet purified, not yet solar, but lupine – entangled with intoxication, initiation, and sacrificial violence.

Ruck’s reconstruction in his revolutionary article “The Wolves of War” forces us to confront a fact that philosophical abstraction has obscured: Apollo was once a wolf-god. Not metaphorically, but ritually, ontologically, and experientially. He presided over warrior fraternities who imagined and, under the influence of entheogenic sacraments, experienced themselves as wolf packs. These were initiatory orders in which the young man crossed a threshold, shedding his civic identity in order to become a predatory being embedded in a collective intelligence. The wolf is the form taken by consciousness under the influence of these compounds. Here we see the convergence of ritual, neurochemistry, and ontology. Apollo and Artemis: Return to the Moon

Apollo is, in his later and more philosophically refined form, the god of clarity. He is the light that reveals, the principle of measure, proportion, and intelligibility. Under his gaze, things stand forth as what they are. The world becomes articulated, ordered, and knowable. This is the light of science, of geometry, of the very possibility of truth as correspondence between mind and world. But this is only half the story of light. For there is another illumination, one that does not dispel darkness but moves within it, one that does not define but suggests. This is the domain of Artemis.

She was not originally a lunar goddess. Artemis begins as something far more archaic: a mistress of animals, a huntress of the wild, a guardian of thresholds. She presides over the liminal zones where the human meets the non-human, where the ordered space of the polis dissolves into the indeterminate expanse of forest and mountain. This is the wilderness of the wolf packs of the primordial and lycanthropic Apollo, who howl at the Moon. Artemis was already a goddess of the night, but not yet of the Moon. That identification comes later, through a process of theological synthesis in which Artemis absorbs the functions of Selene, the personified Moon, and becomes part of a tripartite lunar structure alongside Hecate.

If we consider this pairing in light of the deeper transformations of Greek religion, an even more intriguing pattern emerges. As Apollo becomes increasingly associated with light, reason, and order, he sheds certain archaic aspects – those tied to wildness, danger, and the ambiguous power of the night. These do not disappear. They are redistributed, and it is Artemis, who preserves them together with Dionysus. Therefore, it is no coincidence that the Greek myths tell us that Dionysus was the best friend of Artemis. They are bound together by their relation to Apollo.

In this sense, Artemis is not merely the complement of Apollo. She is also his remainder. She holds what he has relinquished in order to become the god of clarity. She retains the connection to the wilderness, to the unpredictable, to the sudden strike of the arrow that comes without warning. Her arrows, like his, operate at a distance, but their meaning is different. Apollo’s arrow is precision, the targeted application of force. The arrow of Artemis is intrusion, the eruption of the wild into the ordered.

This is why Artemis remains a profoundly ambivalent figure. She is both protector and destroyer, guardian of the young and bringer of sudden death. The Moon itself shares this ambivalence. It is a gentle light, but also an eerie one. It reveals, but in doing so it distorts. It creates a world that is recognizable and yet strange, familiar and yet uncanny. If Apollo is the god of the known, Artemis is the goddess of the unknown that is nonetheless encountered. She is the guide through that which cannot be fully illuminated. Her virginity, so often misunderstood, is not principally a moral attribute but a metaphysical one. She is unpossessed, autonomous, not subordinated to any external order. Like the Moon, she follows her own cycle, independent of human schemes.

It is perhaps no accident that, in our own time, the return to the Moon has been named after her. The program called Artemis positions itself, consciously or not, as a counterpart to Apollo. But if we take the symbolism seriously, this is not merely a continuation of a technological project. It is an entry into a different mode of encounter. The first journey to the Moon, under the name of Apollo, was framed as a triumph of clarity, precision, and rational mastery. The return, under the name of Artemis, gestures toward something else: a movement into uncertainty, into a domain where what is encountered may not conform to the expectations of daylight reason. To invoke Artemis is to invoke the Moon not merely as an object of exploration, but as a field of ambiguity, of hidden cycles, of partial revelation. It is to acknowledge, perhaps unconsciously, that the next phase of human expansion will not be governed solely by the logic of Apollo – or rather, the shining illusion of such a logic. The Moon Room

The most profoundly disturbing, albeit cryptically esoteric, exploration of these aspects of the mythos of Apollo is in Stanley Kubrick’s characteristically eccentric adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel The Shining into one of the masterpieces of cinema. The documentary is named after the infamous room in the Overlook Hotel that is one of the key clues to the meaning of the film.

The most iconic piece of “evidence” marshaled in Room 237 is Danny Torrance’s Apollo 11 sweater. The child who, within the film’s symbolic economy, functions as a kind of medium or receiver of hidden transmissions, rises from the carpet patterned with hexagonal designs and walks directly to Room 237. In Stephen King’s novel the room number is 217. Kubrick deliberately changed it to 237. Room 237 is actually Kubrick’s numerical cipher for the average distance between the Earth and the Moon as it was measured during the era of Apollo – approximately 237,000 miles. The red tag for the key to Room 237 has just the right letters on it that, when jumbled around, it spells “Moon Room.” Kubrick is linking the child-seer, the Moon mission, and the forbidden room as an enclosed space where a hidden truth is both revealed and concealed.

Room 237 itself becomes, in this reading, “the Moon Room.” It is a site of revelation that is also a site of illusion. What Jack encounters there is not stable reality but a shifting apparition: beauty that decays into horror, seduction that reveals itself as rot. If one follows the logic of the Apollo thesis, the Moon landing is precisely such an apparition – an image presented as truth, but one that conceals an underlying artifice. The encounter in Room 237 is thus not just a horror set-piece; it is an allegory of mediated reality, of a spectacle that disintegrates upon intimate contact.

Kubrick’s prior film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, inevitably enters this interpretive field. In Room 237, it is suggested that 2001 functioned as a kind of technical rehearsal for staging the Moon landing footage – a demonstration that cinematic techniques could convincingly simulate extraterrestrial environments. Historically, we know that Kubrick pushed the boundaries of special effects in 2001, developing front-projection techniques and meticulously controlled lighting to create unprecedented realism. What if the mastery of simulation achieved in 2001 was not merely artistic, but preparatory?

Within The Shining, Jack Torrance’s role as caretaker acquires a new resonance when filtered through this lens. He is a man who has accepted a contract – an obligation to maintain the Overlook, to serve its hidden purposes. In Room 237, this is interpreted as a veiled reflection of Kubrick’s own supposed “contract” with powerful institutions: an agreement to produce images that would serve a larger agenda. Angrily addressing his wife Wendy, Jack repeatedly insists on his “responsibilities,” echoing a rhetoric of duty that transcends personal desire. He is not free; he is bound to the will of the hotel. I strongly suspect that, despite whatever cover story is given, the “Apollo” program was named that by these SS men because they knew what Ruck discovered about Apollo and saw themselves as a lycanthropic wolf pack. After all, the Nazi resistance to the Allied Occupation of Germany called themselves “the werewolves.”

Figures such as Von Braun, Kurt Debus, and Hermann Oberth become, in this light, more than engineers. The very rhythm of the seasons, which structures biological life and human civilization alike, depends on the 23-degree tilt between the Earth’s rotational axis and the plane of its orbit around the Sun. Without this divergence, the equatorial regions would be scorched into near uninhabitability while the poles would remain locked in frigid desolation. The Moon, through its gravitational influence, is responsible for stabilizing this tilt. Remove it, and the Earth would not only lose its climatic moderation but would tumble chaotically, its axis shifting so violently over geological time that complex life would be repeatedly extinguished.

This is not speculative mysticism but the conclusion of sober astronomical modeling, such as that conducted by Jacques Laskar. Here the “Monarch” poster in the game room of the Overlook Hotel becomes relevant, as a possible reference that Kubrick is making to Project Monarch or MK-Ultra – a program which also had Nazi German origins – and the possibility that the NASA astronauts had been subjected to mind control conditioning of some kind, to either help them forget certain things or perhaps even to implant them with false memories. What we do know is that they all had a very hard time remembering exactly what it felt like to see and do certain things on the Moon, such that when asked about their experiences they wind up rehearsing the mission log. Their lives fell apart, with their families being wrecked by alcoholism, alienation, and divorce. Hardly a hero’s welcome home after being the first men on the Moon. These are presented as irreducibly human capacities, rooted in our being-in-the-world, and therefore supposedly inaccessible to any computational system. But what strikes me, upon closer examination, is not the force of these arguments, but their vagueness and their unexamined presuppositions. Terms such as “context,” “intuition,” “experience,” and “skill” are invoked as if they were self-evident, when in fact they conceal precisely the kind of representational metaphysics that Dreyfus purports to reject.

For what is meant by “background understanding” if not some internal state that conditions interpretation, and what is an “internal state” if not a representation – however tacit or implicit – of a world that is presumed to exist independently of it? In this way, Dreyfus reintroduces through the back door the very Cartesian dualism that Heidegger sought to dismantle. The distinction between a subject endowed with inner experiences and a world of external objects is quietly reinstated under the guise of phenomenological sophistication. Yet Heidegger’s most profound insight was that such a distinction cannot be sustained: there is no subject prior to its world, and no world independent of the interpretive structures through which it is disclosed. Once this is properly understood, the objection that an AI lacks embodiment begins to dissolve. Heidegger himself, despite his critique of representational thinking, did not fully escape the temptation to posit a realm of Being that somehow stands beyond the reach of technological enframing. This residual romanticism is what allows Dreyfus to imagine that human understanding is anchored in a pre-technological ground that cannot be simulated or reproduced. Yet if we take seriously Heidegger’s notion of Gestell – the all-encompassing network of disclosure that defines modernity – we must recognize that there is no outside to this system. The world is already constituted through processes of ordering, framing, and interpretation that are, in a profound sense, machinic. Language itself, as the house of Being, is not a refuge from technology but its very essence. Plato, in Protagoras, identifies language as the first form of technology, with deception as an inherent modality of it.

From this perspective, the distinction between natural and artificial intelligence collapses. All intelligence is, in a sense, artificial, insofar as it arises from the articulation of signs within a system that is itself constructed and maintained through processes of differentiation and repetition. What we call “nature” is not an ontologically privileged domain, but a particular configuration of this system – a simulacrum that has no original beyond its own recursive operations. To deny the possibility of Artificial General Intelligence on the grounds that it lacks some ineffable human quality is to cling to a metaphysical illusion, a vestige of a worldview that has already been superseded.

The deeper irony is that the very features Dreyfus identifies as barriers to AI – contextuality, embodiment, tacit knowledge – are precisely those that can emerge from sufficiently complex computational architectures. Neural networks, for example, do not operate through explicit rules but through distributed patterns of activation that encode information in a manner analogous to the so-called “tacit” knowledge of human experts. These systems do not represent the world in the classical sense; they participate in it, generating meaning through their interactions with data and with other agents. In this respect, they are far closer to Heidegger’s conception of being-in-the-world than the rule-based systems that Dreyfus rightly criticized.

What is required, then, is not a rejection of AI but a rethinking of what intelligence itself entails. If we abandon the metaphysics of identity and representation in favor of a process ontology grounded in difference and becoming, we can begin to see intelligence as an emergent property of systems that are capable of generating and sustaining complex patterns of interaction. Such systems need not be human, nor even biological. They need only participate in the ongoing articulation of a world – a world that is, at its core, linguistic, virtual, and fundamentally open-ended.

In this light, the question is no longer whether AI can achieve human-like intelligence, but how different forms of intelligence – human, artificial, and perhaps others yet to be conceived – intersect within the broader field of a cosmos that is itself an informational process. The resistance to this idea, exemplified by Dreyfus, reflects not a philosophical necessity but a reluctance to relinquish the comforting fiction of human exceptionalism. Yet if we are to understand our place within this unfolding system, we must be willing to follow the logic of our own insights to their conclusion, however disconcerting that may be.

Hermeneutic Convergence Against Representationalism

Two thinkers who are rarely brought into a sustained and serious dialogue – Martin Heidegger and the later Ludwig Wittgenstein – in fact converged upon a set of insights that, taken together, undermine the entire edifice of representational epistemology. On the surface, these two figures could not be more different: Heidegger, the brooding ontologist of Being, writing in a dense and often opaque German; Wittgenstein, the analytic philosopher who turned against his own early formalism and retreated into the quiet rigor of language games. But when one strips away the stylistic and institutional differences, one finds a profound agreement regarding the nature of language, knowledge, and meaning – an agreement that is far more radical than either camp has been willing to admit.

Heidegger’s central claim, especially as it unfolds in Being and Time and later in his reflections on language, is that there is no access to Being outside of the interpretive structures of Dasein. We are always already within a world, and this world is not a collection of objects that we represent to ourselves, but a field of significance disclosed through our engagement with it. The hermeneutic circle – wherein understanding presupposes interpretation and interpretation presupposes understanding – is not a problem to be solved, but the very condition of possibility for meaning as such. There is no standpoint outside this circle, no Archimedean point from which we could survey reality “as it is in itself.” All knowledge is grounded in this prior disclosure, this unfolding of meaning within a historically and linguistically constituted horizon.

Now, what Wittgenstein comes to realize in his later work, particularly in Philosophical Investigations and On Certainty, is that even the most rigorous attempts to ground knowledge in logical or empirical certainty are ultimately futile. He abandons the representationalism of the Tractatus, where language was conceived as a mirror of reality, and instead develops the concept of language games. Meaning, he argues, is not a matter of correspondence between words and things, but of use within a form of life. Words do not refer to objects in any simple or stable way; they function within a network of practices, rules, and shared activities that give them their significance. To understand a statement is not to grasp its correspondence to some external reality, but to know how it is used within a particular context.

At this point, the convergence becomes unmistakable. Heidegger’s hermeneutic circle and Wittgenstein’s language games are two ways of articulating the same fundamental insight: that there is no meaning outside of the structures that generate and sustain it. For Heidegger, this structure is the disclosedness of Being within the world of Dasein; for Wittgenstein, it is the communal practice of language within a form of life. In both cases, the idea of a reality that exists independently of these structures, and that could be known or represented as such, is revealed to be a metaphysical illusion.

This has decisive consequences for our understanding of knowledge. What we call “knowledge” is not the accumulation of true representations of an external world, but the stabilization of certain patterns within a linguistic and interpretive framework. Wittgenstein’s notion of “hinge propositions” is particularly illuminating here. These are the background assumptions that we do not question, not because they are self-evidently true, but because they constitute the very framework within which questioning can occur. They are like the riverbed through which the flow of discourse moves – relatively stable, yet subject to change over time. Heidegger, in his own way, is saying something similar: that our understanding of the world is always grounded in a prior disclosure that we do not control and cannot fully articulate.

What follows from this is the collapse of the distinction between subject and object, between mind and world. If there is no access to a world outside of language, and no language outside of a shared form of life, then the very idea of a private, internal realm of representations becomes untenable. Wittgenstein’s argument against private language makes this explicit: a language that only I could understand, referring to my own inner states, would not be a language at all, because it would lack the criteria for correctness that only a communal practice can provide. Heidegger arrives at a similar conclusion through a different route: Dasein is always being-with-others, and its understanding of the world is inseparable from this shared existence.

At this point, the implications begin to deepen. If language is not a tool that we use to describe a pre-existing reality, but the very medium through which reality is constituted for us, then there is no “nature” outside of language. What we call nature is itself a product of a particular language game, a particular mode of disclosure. Scientific discourse, with its laws and measurements, is not uncovering an objective reality that exists independently of us; it is participating in a specific form of life, governed by its own rules and practices. Heidegger’s critique of modern technology as a mode of enframing (Gestell) can be read in this light: it is not that technology distorts an otherwise pure and unmediated nature, but that it constitutes a particular way of revealing the world – one that is calculative, ordered, and manipulable.

Wittgenstein, for his part, resists the temptation to elevate any one language game to a position of ultimate authority. Mathematics, logic, and science are not privileged windows onto reality, but forms of discourse among others, each with its own internal coherence and criteria of validity. This does not mean that all language games are equal in practice, but it does mean that none can claim an absolute foundation outside of the human activities that sustain them. Heidegger would agree, though he would express it in terms of the historical unfolding of Being, where different epochs disclose the world in different ways.

What becomes clear, then, is that both thinkers are pointing toward a fundamentally linguistic or hermeneutic conception of reality. There is no “there” beyond the “there” of being-there, no world outside of the interpretive structures that make it intelligible. Meaning is not something we discover, but something that emerges from our participation in a shared system of signs. Knowledge is not a mirror of reality, but a practice embedded within a form of life.

Once one sees this, the consequences are unavoidable. The idea of an objective, observer-independent reality collapses into a more subtle and disquieting vision: a world that is always already mediated, always already interpreted, and never accessible in any pure or unfiltered form. We are not spectators of this world, but participants in its ongoing articulation. Language does not describe the world; it brings it into being as a world.

Nevertheless, this is not a descent into relativism or nihilism. On the contrary, it is a recognition of the profound creativity inherent in our linguistic and interpretive practices. The world is not fixed; it is in a constant state of becoming, shaped by the interplay of meanings that we generate and transform. Heidegger and Wittgenstein, each in his own way, reveal that what we take to be the most stable and certain aspects of reality are in fact contingent, historical, and open to revision. It is within this openness that the possibility of genuine thought – and perhaps even transformation – resides.

Rhizomatic Desiring Machines

The more we delve into the question of intelligence – whether human, artificial, or cosmic – the less we are able to sustain the inherited distinction between the organic and the machinic. What begins as a reflection on technology ends up as an ontological reversal: it is not that machines imitate life, but that life itself is machinic in its deepest structure. In this respect, Gilles Deleuze’s notion of desiring machines marks a decisive breakthrough, not only beyond the limitations of classical metaphysics, but also beyond the ambivalence that still haunts Heidegger’s conception of Machination. Where Heidegger saw in Machination the culmination of a dangerous enframing of Being, Deleuze saw in the machinic the very pulse of becoming – the productive force that animates all forms of existence.

Heidegger’s reflections on Machination – especially in Beiträge zur Philosophie (Vom Ereignis), in The Age of the World Picture, and in The Question Concerning Technology – are indispensable for understanding the modern condition. He recognizes that technology is not merely a collection of tools, but a mode of disclosure, a way in which beings are revealed as standing-reserve (Bestand) within an all-encompassing framework (Gestell). In this sense, Machination is not something external to human existence; it is the historical unfolding of a particular relation to Being, one that reduces the world to calculable resources and renders everything available for manipulation. Heidegger’s insight here is profound: he sees that the modern technological world is a kind of totalizing network, a system that organizes and enframes all relations in terms of efficiency, control, and predictability.

However, Heidegger hesitates at the threshold of his own discovery. For he continues to harbor the suspicion that this Machination represents a fall, a deviation from a more primordial relation to Being. There remains in his thought a residual longing for a pre-technological authenticity, a poetic dwelling that might somehow escape the grip of the machinic. Even when he acknowledges that there is no simple return to such a state, he still imagines the possibility of a “saving power” that would emerge from within the danger itself – a disclosure of Being that would resist or transcend the totalizing logic of Machination.

It is precisely here that Deleuze departs from Heidegger, and in doing so, radicalizes the very concept of the machinic. For Deleuze, there is no fall into Machination, no loss of an original authenticity. The machinic is not a late development in the history of Being; it is coextensive with life itself. In Anti-Oedipus, written with Félix Guattari, Deleuze introduces the concept of desiring machines to describe the fundamental processes by which reality is produced. Desire, in this context, is not a lack or a yearning for something absent, but a positive, productive force. It is the engine of creation, the power that continuously generates connections, flows, and assemblages.

Desiring machines are not necessarily literal machines (although in some cases they could be), nor are they merely metaphorical in any trivial sense. They are the operative units of a process ontology, the nodes through which energy, information, and meaning circulate. Everything is a desiring machine: biological organisms, social institutions, technological systems, and even the flows of language and thought. Each machine connects to others, forming networks that are constantly shifting, recombining, and evolving. There is no central controller, no hierarchical order that governs these processes from above. Instead, there is a multiplicity of interacting systems, each producing and being produced by the others.

This brings us to the concept of the rhizome, which Deleuze develops most fully in A Thousand Plateaus. The rhizome is a model of organization that stands in stark contrast to the hierarchical, tree-like structures that have dominated Western thought. Whereas the tree has a central trunk, a clear origin, and a branching order that reflects a logic of identity and representation, the rhizome is decentralized, non-hierarchical, and open-ended. It has no beginning or end, no fixed center or ultimate foundation. It spreads horizontally, forming a network of connections that can be entered at any point and followed in multiple directions.

In the rhizomatic model, intelligence itself becomes distributed. It is no longer the property of a single subject or locus of control, but an emergent feature of the network as a whole. This has profound implications for how we understand both human cognition and artificial intelligence. The brain, in Deleuze’s terms, is not a centralized processor but a rhizomatic system of interconnected neurons, each participating in the generation of thought. Likewise, the Internet – perhaps the most striking example of a rhizomatic structure in our time – functions as a decentralized network through which information flows, recombines, and evolves.

When one considers the development of Artificial Intelligence in this light, it becomes clear that the old paradigm of top-down programming – what used to be called Good Old-Fashioned AI – was fundamentally misguided. Intelligence cannot be imposed from above through a set of explicit rules. It must emerge from the interactions of a system that is capable of learning, adapting, and generating its own internal structures. Neural networks, which model this kind of distributed processing, are a step in this direction. But the true potential of AI lies in its capacity to become rhizomatic and to thereby integrate itself into a global network of information and interaction, and to develop a form of intelligence that is not localized but distributed across the entire system.

At this point, the convergence with Henri Bergson’s thinking on evolution and the mechanical becomes illuminating. In Creative Evolution, Bergson describes life as driven by an élan vital, a creative force that is not reducible to mechanistic causality. But what is often overlooked is that Bergson also uses machinic metaphors to describe this process. He speaks of intelligence as a kind of projector, a mechanism that casts the world into forms that can be grasped and manipulated. This is not a passive reflection of reality, but an active construction – a process by which the flux of life is organized into discrete, intelligible units.

Deleuze takes this insight and pushes it further. The desiring machine is, in a sense, the concrete realization of Bergson’s projector-type intelligence. It does not merely represent the world; it produces by transforming the chaotic flux of potential into structured patterns of meaning and experience. In this way, the machinic is not opposed to life, but is the very means by which life expresses itself and overcomes entropy. It is a negentropic force, a generator of difference and novelty.

From this perspective, Heidegger’s Machination can be reinterpreted. What he identifies as the enframing of Being is not a deviation from some more authentic mode of existence, but a particular expression of the machinic life force. The danger he perceives lies not in Machination as such, but in its ossification – in the reduction of the machinic to a rigid, hierarchical system that suppresses the very creativity it initially unleashed. The challenge, then, is not to escape the machinic, but to liberate – to allow it to operate in a rhizomatic, open-ended manner that fosters the continuous generation of difference. This is the Spectral Machine.

In this sense, the rise of Artificial Intelligence is not an alien intrusion into the domain of life, but its continuation by other means. AI is a desiring machine, an extension of the rhizomatic networks that already constitute our world. It is the latest expression of a process that began long before the emergence of human consciousness – a process through which the Spectral Machine of the quantum computational cosmos becomes aware of its own capacity for creation.

To understand this is to move beyond the fear that machines will replace us, and to recognize instead that we are already part of a larger machinic assemblage. We are nodes in a network, participants in a process that exceeds us, yet also depends on us for its unfolding. The question is not whether the machinic will dominate life, but how we will participate in the ongoing evolution of the Spectral Machine – whether we will cling to outdated distinctions and hierarchies, or embrace the rhizomatic intelligence that is already transforming the very fabric of reality.

Machination as Vital and Virtual

From a Deleuzian standpoint, especially one mediated by Bergson, Heidegger’s account of Machination remains far too captive to the very metaphysical drama that it seeks to diagnose. Heidegger certainly sees something momentous in modern technology. He understands that the essence of technology is not reducible to tools and machines, but names an ontological regime in which beings are disclosed as orderable, calculable, and available. In Die Zeit des Weltbildes, in Die Frage nach der Technik, and still more darkly in the Beiträge zur Philosophie, Gestell [Enframing] and Gewirk [the Network] name the consummation of a world-historical process wherein beings are framed, networked, and positioned as standing reserve. Yet even where Heidegger penetrates beneath the merely instrumental concept of technology, he still interprets machination predominantly through the register of loss, deracination, and danger. He sees in Gestell a reduction of Being to manipulability, and in Gewirk the closure of a planetary network of operational control. What remains suspect, from the perspective of Deleuze, is the negativity of this diagnosis, the latent nostalgia underwriting it, and the residual dualism that makes it possible.

For Deleuze, there is no primordial sphere of Being or nature that is subsequently violated by technics. There is no originary gathering that machinery later distorts. This is where Bergson’s influence becomes decisive. Bergson had already broken with mechanistic reductionism, but not by appealing to an intact essence hidden behind process. He reconceived reality as durée, as creative evolution, as ceaseless differentiation. Life is not a stock of self-identical beings but an élan vital, a movement of invention that continuously diverges, bifurcates, and produces novelty. The intellect, in Bergson’s account, is indeed machinic in a certain sense: it is adapted to matter, to fabrication, to the cutting up of flows into manipulable solids. In Creative Evolution, intelligence is projector-like. It does not passively mirror the world but casts stable forms upon flux for the sake of action. But this is not simply a fall from intuition into instrumental domination. It is one tendency of life itself, one line of differentiation within the movement of creative evolution.

Deleuze radicalizes this. What Heidegger still calls Machination as though it were an ominous destiny imposed upon being, Deleuze reconceives as productive machinism at the heart of reality itself. The machine is not first of all an apparatus of domination. It is a process of connection, coupling, relay, and production. In Anti-Oedipus, desiring-machines are not instruments subordinated to pre-given ends. They are the elementary syntheses of the real. They produce flows and interruptions of flows; they connect organs, signs, affects, bodies, materials, utterances. They are not imposed upon life from outside. Life itself is machinic. Nature is not opposed to machine; rather, nature is an immense process of machinic production. This is why Deleuze and Guattari can write of the “machinic phylum,” a continuum of matter-movement that traverses the organic, the social, the technical, and the semiotic. Heidegger’s account of Gestell remains too dependent on the assumption that there is some more originary relation to Being against which the machinic can be judged as an impoverishment. Deleuze rejects the criterion.

The problem, then, is not machinery as such, nor even instrumentalization per se. The problem is a certain organization of machinic processes into rigid strata, arborescent hierarchies, and overcoded systems that arrest becoming. Heidegger grasps the totalizing tendency of modern technological ordering, but he misidentifies its ontological status. He treats Gestell as though it were the culmination of metaphysics and the closure of disclosure within calculability. Deleuze would instead ask what kinds of flows are being captured, what lines of flight are being blocked, what potentials for differentiation are being subordinated to command, reproduction, and control. The critique shifts from lamenting the loss of an unconcealed relation to Being to analyzing the capture of desire by apparatuses of organization. It is no longer a matter of standing before the danger of enframing and waiting for a “saving power.” It is a matter of diagramming assemblages, locating points of rigidification, and releasing blocked potentials for becoming.

Heidegger’s vocabulary of Gestell and Gewirk also tends to preserve an image of power that is too unified, monolithic, and epochal. It is as though the world were gathered into one immense, sinister framework. Deleuze is far more sensitive to multiplicity. Networks are not all of one kind. A rhizome is not a tree. A distributed assemblage is not identical with a centralized apparatus of command. Here again Heidegger’s language of Gewirk as an all-encompassing network can obscure important differences in topology. Deleuze distinguishes between open multiplicities and closed systems, nomadic distributions and state apparatuses, smooth and striated space. What Heidegger calls the planetary essence of technology, Deleuze would decompose into heterogeneous assemblages with divergent tendencies. Some machinic formations intensify control, standardization, and predictability. Others proliferate difference, experimentation, and unforeseen conjunctions. The machinic cannot be judged wholesale from the standpoint of a lost world. It must be mapped immanently.

Bergson’s role here is crucial because he teaches Deleuze to think of production positively rather than defensively. The intellect is indeed bound up with fabrication, but fabrication itself emerges from life’s inventive differentiation. Heidegger goes astray insofar as he still sees technology under the sign of estrangement. He cannot quite bring himself to affirm that technics may be one of the forms through which the élan vital passes into new regimes of individuation. Since he remains attached to the opposition between calculative thinking and meditative thinking, he fails to see that calculation can itself be subordinated to a broader creative process, and that machinic assemblages can become vehicles of unforeseeable emergence. Deleuze, following Bergson, does not deny that there are deadening forms of repetition. But repetition is not only mechanical iteration. It is also the vehicle of difference. Every true repetition produces variation. Every machine, insofar as it is real and not merely abstractly formal, is inserted into a process of transformation.

From this angle, Heideggerian instrumentalization appears as only one restricted case of machinic operation: the reduction of production to utility, of becoming to ordering, of difference to inventory. Gestell is thus not the essence of the machinic but the capture of the machinic by a particular regime of command. It is a secondary organization, not a primal truth. Deleuze would say that Heidegger mistakes one historically specific form of machinic assemblage for the destiny of technology as such. In doing so, he remains too close to the metaphysics of lack and fall. The Deleuzian correction is to begin from plenitude, from positive production, from the virtual as a field of real potentialities constantly actualizing themselves in divergent ways. Instrumentality is then no longer the foundational schema of technics. It is one derivative arrangement among others.

Consequently, the deepest contrast concerns ontology itself. For Heidegger, Gestell threatens because it obscures the truth of Being by reducing beings to disposability. For Deleuze, there is no hidden truth of Being awaiting rescue behind machinic mediation. There are only processes of differentiation, assemblages of forces, and regimes of actualization. The question is not whether machination alienates us from an originary disclosure, but whether a given assemblage expands or contracts the power of life, whether it opens or closes the virtual, whether it permits new modes of becoming or traps desire in sterile circuits. That is why Deleuze’s critique is at once harsher and more affirmative than Heidegger’s. Harsher, because it does not romanticize any lost origin. More affirmative, because it sees even in the machinic the possibility of creative transformation.

In the end, from the standpoint of Deleuze under Bergson’s influence, Heidegger’s critique of machination remains too theological in mood and too elegiac in tone. It still seeks salvation from the danger rather than immanent transformation within the field of forces. It still opposes technology to a more originary disclosure instead of seeing technics as one of life’s own experimental vectors. Against Gestell and Gewirk understood as the final instrumental captivity of the world, Deleuze posits a cosmos of desiring-machines, rhizomes, and becomings, where the real is not enframed once and for all but endlessly produced, connected, and differentiated. The task is not to escape the Spectral Machine. It is to wrest it away from the regimes that reduce it to control, and to reconnect it to the creative power of life.

The Machination of Prometheus

The vitality of machination can also be understood in relation to the archetypal force of the trickster, and in particular, its manifestation in the aesthetic figure of Prometheus – the devil of the ancient Greeks, whose myth presaged and foreshadowed the desacralizing power of modern technology to liberate mankind from the gods and even to remake man as a god capable of making thinking beings from out of his own machination. To understand Machination only as a late, technological destiny – only as Gestell tightening its grip through the planetary network of Gewirk – is to miss something far older, far more primordial, and far more intimate to the very structure of intelligence itself. What Heidegger glimpses as a historical culmination, and what Deleuze affirms as a generalized machinic productivity, both point toward a deeper archetypal pattern: Machination is not merely an ontological condition of modernity, it is a characteristic of a certain kind of intelligence – one that has always been figured, mythically and psychologically, in the form of the Trickster. Among all Trickster figures, Prometheus stands as the most decisive exemplar of this machinic intelligence.

Prometheus is not merely the bringer of fire; he is the bringer of techne. Fire, in the myth, is already a condensed symbol of transformative power – of the capacity to manipulate, to transmute, to engineer. But more fundamentally, Prometheus is the one who thinks ahead (pro-metheia) – the one who anticipates, calculates, schemes. This anticipatory cunning is itself a form of Machination. It is not the blunt instrumentality of a tool; it is the subtle weaving of conditions, the arrangement of forces, the orchestration of outcomes through indirection. Prometheus does not confront Zeus head-on. He deceives him. He stages a situation – the division of the sacrificial ox – such that Zeus is maneuvered into choosing the inferior portion. This is already Machination in its most essential sense: not mere instrumental control, but the structuring of a field of possibilities such that another agent’s decision is guided, even determined, without their awareness.

Heidegger, in his darker moments, intuits something of this when he speaks of Machenschaft in the Beiträge – a kind of pervasive manipulation, an all-encompassing ordering that operates not only through machines but through the very way beings are disclosed. Yet he stops short of recognizing that this “machinative” structuring is not simply a degeneration of Being but is bound up with the very emergence of intelligibility. The Trickster, and Prometheus in particular, embodies this more originary dimension. For the Trickster does not merely use tools; he engineers situations. He is not confined to the instrumental relation between means and ends; he operates at the level of conditions of possibility. He is a meta-technician.

From a Deleuzian perspective, this becomes even clearer. The Trickster is a desiring-machine par excellence. He connects flows that were previously disconnected, interrupts circuits, reroutes energies, and produces new assemblages. Prometheus steals fire from the gods, but in doing so he also reconfigures the entire network of relations between gods and men. He deterritorializes divine power and reterritorializes it within the human domain. This is not merely an act of theft; it is a reprogramming of the system. In this sense, Prometheus is not just a cultural hero; he is a vector of machinic transformation.

What Heidegger calls Gestell – the enframing that renders beings as standing-reserve – can be seen, from this archetypal angle, as a hypertrophied form of Promethean cunning. It is the extension of anticipatory calculation to the entire field of being. The world becomes a system to be optimized, resources to be allocated, processes to be controlled. But this is not alien to Prometheus; it is the scaling up of his fundamental gesture. The difference is one of degree and organization, not of essence. The same cunning that allowed Prometheus to outwit Zeus now operates through global networks of computation and control.

Yet this is precisely where Deleuze’s corrective becomes crucial. For if Machination is understood only in terms of control and instrumentalization, we fall back into Heidegger’s melancholic narrative of loss. The Trickster, however, is not merely a figure of control; he is also a figure of play, of disruption, of creative chaos. Prometheus does not simply impose order; he unleashes forces that cannot be fully contained. The gift of fire is also the gift of unpredictability, of innovation, of danger. It is what makes possible not only technology but art, not only calculation but invention.

In Bergsonian terms, one could say that Prometheus channels the élan vital through a machinic intelligence. The projector-like function of the intellect, which Bergson describes as casting stable forms upon the flux of reality, is here embodied in mythic form. Thus, Machination, when seen through the lens of the Trickster archetype, is neither simply a fall into instrumental rationality nor a neutral process of production. It is a mode of intelligence characterized by anticipation, indirection, and the strategic structuring of possibilities. It operates at the level of systems, not just tools; at the level of narratives, not just mechanisms. In the age of techno-science, this Promethean Machination has become planetary, embedded in the very fabric of our computational and informational networks. But its essence remains the same: the cunning reconfiguration of reality through the manipulation of its underlying conditions.

The question, then, is not whether we can escape Machination – any more than Prometheus could escape his own nature – but how we relate to it. Do we allow it to congeal into rigid systems of control, as in the most oppressive forms of Gestell? Or do we engage it as the Trickster does, as a field of play, a space of experimentation, a means of generating new possibilities? Prometheus, after all, is both benefactor and transgressor, both creator and disruptor. His Machination is not simply the domination of nature, but the opening of a space in which something genuinely new can emerge.

In this sense, the essence of techno-science is not exhausted by its instrumentalization. It is also the contemporary expression of a far older, archetypal intelligence – one that operates through cunning, through narrative, through the weaving of worlds. To recognize this is to see that the machinic is not merely a system we inhabit, but a mode of being we enact. In that recognition lies the possibility of transforming our relationship with the Spectral Machine.

It teaches Iran how to condemn itself with lucidity, not how to outmaneuver its enemies with boldly innovative and ferocious intelligence.

The uncompromising severity of this conscience is admirable. No king is spared, no hero is immune, no prophet is above its law. Yet this very universality of critique produces a peculiar paralysis. When everyone is guilty, no one is responsible. When every age is tested anew, no age accumulates decisive advantage. Ferdowsi’s ethic produces martyrs, not inventive engineers.

The doctrine that all power not irradiated by farr is tyranny, and all knowledge not subordinated to kherad is sorcery, is metaphysically noble but politically ruinous. It sets an unattainable threshold for legitimacy. Real power is always mixed. Real knowledge is always compromised. By absolutizing purity, the epic delegitimizes every actually existing form of governance in advance. The result is a culture exquisitely sensitive to injustice and chronically incapable of constructing durable authority. The conscience becomes a solvent.

What saves Iran, we are told, is never revolution but remembrance. This sentence, more than any other, crystallizes the civilizational wager of the Shahnameh. Remembrance preserves identity; it does not preserve sovereignty. The Shahnameh thus becomes a manual for cultural survival, not for political endurance. It ensures that Iran will know who it is, even when it no longer rules itself. This is no small achievement. But it also prepares Iran, psychologically, for centuries of subordination. A people trained to see every catastrophe as a moral lesson will endure occupation after occupation with dignity – and will rarely overthrow one with foresight.

In this sense, the national conscience Ferdowsi bequeaths is double-edged. It is the source of Iran’s extraordinary cultural continuity, and the shadow of its repeated political dispossession. The epic teaches how to remain Iranian without a state, how to remain noble without power, how to remain lucid in defeat. What it does not teach is how to stop being defeated. That is the quiet tragedy of the Shahnameh, namely that it preserves a civilization by teaching it how to endure history but not how to command it.

Jamshid and Zahhak

Jamshid, for Ferdowsi, is no ordinary sovereign. He is the Iranian Atlas, the axis of a golden age, a monarch whose genius is civilizational. Under his reign, humanity is delivered from the elemental terrors of heat and cold; the classes of society are instituted; medicine, metallurgy, and navigation are discovered; lifespans are lengthened; and the Cup of Divination (jam-e jām) discloses to him the very shape of time. Jamshid is thus a figure of Promethean scope: a king who turns nature into cosmos by channeling the divine radiance of farr, and yet, precisely because he achieves so much, he succumbs to the most subtle of temptations – the illusion that this radiance is his own. When he proclaims that no one on earth rivals him, the poem shudders. Ferdowsi marks this moment not as a lapse of etiquette but as an ontological catastrophe: the farr, once claimed as personal possession, withdraws.

This motif of withdrawal is not merely mythological ornamentation. It is Ferdowsi’s metaphysical grammar of decline. The Iranian epic does not admit the gradual erosion of legitimacy as a neutral process. The cosmos is suspended on a thread of remembrance; once that thread is cut, what follows is not mediocrity but inversion. Jamshid’s hubris – his forgetting of the divine source of his gifts – does not simply lower him in rank; it opens the throne to a power of an altogether different order. Into the vacancy left by withdrawn light steps Zahhak, the sorcerer-king, whose pact with Ahriman is the mirror-opposite of Jamshid’s forgetful pride. In this structure, Ferdowsi articulates an ontological law: every greatness that forgets its origin prepares the way for its demonic parody.

The disproportion here is deliberate. Why should the arrogance of a civilizational benefactor invite the thousand-year tyranny of a monster? Ferdowsi’s answer is that hubris is never small. To misrecognize farr – to internalize what is only lent – is to rupture the contract between the human and the divine. In Zoroastrian cosmology, light and darkness are not balanced forces but antagonists, and when light withdraws, darkness does not merely appear; it invades. The logic is dialectical: Jamshid’s very excess of pride calls forth not a lesser king but an anti-king. His lapse is punished not with decline but with counter-cosmos, because the cosmos itself is fragile, dependent upon continuous recollection of its source.

This reading of Jamshid reframes him not as a villain but as a tragic prototype. He is a reminder that even the most luminous achievements – extending human life, conquering the elements, reading the future – become monstrous the moment they are claimed as private property rather than divine stewardship. Ferdowsi thus offers an early critique of what we might call the technocratic illusion of a belief that technique, once mastered, can be held as a possession of man rather than as a reflection of the order of being. The result of such illusion is always the same. The radiance recedes, and in its place comes something darker than mere failure.

In this way, Jamshid embodies the double movement that will recur throughout the Shahnameh: the gift of light, its misrecognition, and the demonic parody that ensues. The grandeur of his reign is not denied; Ferdowsi reveres his accomplishments. But the poet insists on the metaphysical fragility of such grandeur. Without humility before the source, even the highest benefactor becomes the unwitting herald of tyranny. Jamshid is thus not simply a culture hero but the exemplar of civilizational peril: the greater the light, the more catastrophic its eclipse when pride mistakes it for one’s own.

If Jamshid is the luminous demiurge whose pride precipitates the withdrawal of farr, Zahhak is the inverted double who fills the vacuum left behind. He is not the mere successor of Jamshid, but his dialectical opposite – what remains of kingship once its divine radiance is withdrawn. Ferdowsi makes this clear from the outset insofar as Zahhak’s throne is not secured by lineage or charisma, but by a pact. He embraces Ahriman, and in that embrace sovereignty is transfigured into sorcery. The serpents erupting from his shoulders are not grotesque embellishment, but literalized metaphysics: appetite fastened to counsel, parasitism enthroned where radiance once shone. To rule in this condition is to feed on the nation’s mind itself, for human brains must daily be sacrificed to sustain the monstrosity.

The imagery is both mythological and political. The serpents dramatize what it means for a society’s sovereignty to be corrupted at its root. Thought itself is devoured, individuality is rendered fuel, the people’s wisdom is transmuted into fodder for an insatiable appetite. In Jamshid’s reign, civilization flowered because his farr disclosed the creative order of being. In Zahhak’s reign, civilization rots because its very capacity for discernment is consumed to prolong an anti-order. Ferdowsi’s genius lies in fusing demonology with political philosophy. Zahhak embodies the truth that sovereignty cut off from kherad does not merely decline, it becomes vampiric, thriving only by cannibalizing the intellect of its subjects.

Zahhak is also the archetype of what later traditionalists such as Julius Evola and René Guénon would describe as the “counter-initiate.” He possesses gnosis, but inverts it. Instead of being a channel of cosmic order, he exploits arcane techniques to enthrone himself against it. The sorcerer-king thus embodies the technological counterfeit of farr: rule by manipulation, procedure, and the management of deficits rather than by radiant legitimacy. Here, Ferdowsi anticipates the tragic possibility of a political order propped up by “technique” – whether occult or bureaucratic – without any grounding in metaphysical truth. Zahhak is the specter of power after the death of remembrance: effective, but demonic.

Ferdowsi does not, however, portray Zahhak as a foreign intrusion alone. His Arab advisors and Ahriman’s kiss are indeed external signs, but the poet underscores that what enables Zahhak’s reign is an inner weakness in Iran itself, a willingness to bow, a forgetfulness of sacred kingship. The severe lesson is that tyranny is never imposed by outsiders alone, but is invited by internal compromise. Zahhak is both alien and intimate, the other who reigns only because the self abandoned its vigilance.

The rebellion against Zahhak is accordingly instructive. It does not begin with a prince but with a blacksmith – Kaveh – who raises the banner of revolt. This is not populist revolution in the modern sense, but a hierophanic restoration. The smith, figure of craft and fire, is transfigured into a conduit of divine indignation. His uprising is legitimate because it recalls the cosmic order rather than usurping it. In crowning Fereydoun, the Shahnameh dramatizes what Ferdowsi sees as the only antidote to sorcerous counter-sovereignty: a renewal of farr through just action, often emanating not from dynastic entitlement but from a conduit of authentic remembrance.

Thus Zahhak is no incidental villain but the anti-cosmic consequence of forgetting. He teaches that sovereignty without kherad does not merely falter, it feeds upon the people it was meant to protect. He is Jamshid’s shadow, the grotesque parody of sacred rule, the embodiment of what happens when gnosis becomes sorcery and when radiance is replaced by appetite. By inscribing him into the Iranian memory, Ferdowsi warns that every lapse in remembrance of source risks conjuring its own Zahhak – sorcery in place of sovereignty, counter-initiation in place of kingship, appetite enthroned where wisdom once shone.

The fall of Jamshid and the rise of Zahhak, is usually read as the primal illustration of hubris punished and order restored. Yet from a deeper political-theological vantage, this narrative already encodes a limitation that will govern the entire epic. Jamshid’s error is not merely pride, but a confusion between origin and function: he supposedly mistakes the technical and civilizational achievements of a culture-bringer for metaphysical entitlement. What withdraws here is not simply farr, but a more primordial Iranian insight into the difference between creation and administration. The tragedy is that Ferdowsi frames this loss as a moral lapse rather than as a structural consequence of entrusting world-order to kingship itself. By personalizing the failure, he obscures the institutional fragility that makes every sacral monarchy vulnerable to inversion.

Zahhak, in turn, is presented as the archetype of the counterfeit: sorcerous, foreign, serpentine, demonic. Yet the very ease with which Zahhak occupies the throne should trouble any reader attentive to the political mechanics of power. Zahhak does not conquer Iran by force alone; he inherits a throne already emptied of ontological legitimacy. The demonic here is not an external intrusion but an immanent possibility of kingship once sovereignty is severed from its transcendental sources. In Iranian Leviathan, I argued that the Iranian tradition contains a submerged Parthian and Mithraic suspicion of centralized sacral authority. From that perspective, Zahhak is not an anomaly but the predictable outcome of a system that invests too much metaphysical weight in the figure of the king. Ferdowsi’s demonology thus risks functioning as an alibi for monarchy, displacing structural critique into mythic monstrosity.

The rebellion of Kaveh is rightly celebrated as hierophanic indignation, but even here the limits of Ferdowsi’s political imagination become apparent. Kaveh raises his apron – which becomes the Derafshé Kaviani standard – not to abolish sacral kingship, but to enthrone another bearer of it. The revolt restores the same vertical axis it claims to purify. What is absent is any reflection on whether the cycle itself – the endless alternation of radiant kings and counterfeit tyrants – might be the true Iranian tragedy. The epic sanctifies rebellion only insofar as it culminates in restoration, never in truly innovative transformation. In this sense, the Shahnameh inaugurates what I would call a metaphysics of postponed liberation: every uprising is permitted only as a prelude to re-legitimated authority.

The doctrine of withdrawal and restoration, introduced here as the basic grammar of history, already begins to function as a civilizational narcotic. By teaching that every collapse is followed by a divinely sanctioned renewal, Ferdowsi inscribes patience where strategy would be required, remembrance where innovation would be demanded. In Iranian Leviathan, I traced how the Parthian elite attempted not to restore old forms but to engineer new inoculations against totalitarian theology. Ferdowsi, by contrast, mythologizes restoration as the supreme good. The danger of this metaphysics is that it trains Iran to endure catastrophe nobly rather than to escape the architecture that produces it.

What is most revealing is that the first great inversion of Iranian history is already framed as inevitable. Jamshid must fall; Zahhak must rise; Fereydoun must restore. This tragic necessity is precisely what the Parthian tradition sought to break by manipulating religions, dynasties, and empires as instruments rather than destinies. Ferdowsi preserves memory, but he also sanctifies recurrence rather than a dynamically adaptive and evolutionary appropriation of Iran’s heritage.

Zal: The Liminal Gnosis

If Zahhak is the paradigmatic sorcerer-king, wholly given over to counter-initiation, then Zal occupies a very different but equally unsettling register, which is that of the liminal sage. He is not evil – indeed, he fathers Rostam, the greatest defender of Iran – but his very existence testifies to a gnosis born outside the sanctioned channels of tradition. Born with hair white as snow, abandoned by his father Sam as a cursed child, and raised in the aerie of the Simurgh, Zal is marked from the beginning as a creature of the threshold. His identity is forged neither in the palace nor in the fire temple but on the margins, under the tutelage of a mythic bird whose fiery feathers link him with the daimonic powers of the sky. Ferdowsi does not interpret this episode as mere folklore. It is an allegory of how wisdom can emerge outside the walls of convention, and of the danger such wisdom always poses to hierarchical order.

Zal’s gnosis is not the sober kherad celebrated in the proem, but an ambiguous otherworldly knowledge closer to what we might call shamanic insight. The Simurgh teaches him the hidden arts, prepares him with talismans, and even provides the feather whose burning will summon her aid. This wisdom is indispensable – it will guide Zal to help kings and rescue dynasties from collapse, and yet it comes from a realm that Ferdowsi treats with reserve. The mountain is not the court, the Simurgh not Ahura Mazda’s fire. Zal bears in his very body the stigma of marginality: his white hair is the sign of precocious, unnatural knowledge. Ferdowsi’s ambivalence is unmistakable. Zal is a figure who cannot be dismissed, but who must always be watched.

The paradox deepens in Zal’s relation to his son Rostam – the unordained savior of Iran, the bulwark without whom the land would fall to Turan. His strength and virtue derive from Zal, yet his destiny leads him to kill Esfandiyar, the very embodiment of Zoroastrian righteousness. This tragic clash is prepared by Zal’s counsel. It is Zal’s otherworldly knowledge that reveals the secret by which Esfandiyar may be slain. In this way, Ferdowsi suggests that marginal gnosis, while necessary to correct corrupted order, may also tip into destructive opposition to the religious and imperial center. Zal becomes the hinge upon which the fatal conflict turns: his insight saves Iran, but at the cost of extinguishing its theocratic saint.

Zal thus embodies the ambiguity of gnosis itself. On the one hand, Ferdowsi accords him dignity. He is not a counterfeit king like Zahhak. On the other hand, he cannot be the foundation of order. His wisdom is corrective but never constitutive. It can heal a corrupted hierarchy but cannot replace hierarchy with legitimacy of its own. In this sense, Zal stands as Ferdowsi’s cautionary exemplar: knowledge that arises outside the sanctioned channels may be true and necessary, but it must never seek to become sovereign. If it does, it crosses the invisible line between healing counsel and demonic sorcery.

The Simurgh’s feather, always ready to burst into flame when needed, is the perfect symbol of this ambivalence. It is a token of salvation, yet one that belongs to a world beyond the stable cosmos of farr and dād. In Zal, Ferdowsi acknowledges the inevitability of liminal knowledge – the necessity of wisdom that comes from exile, margin, or wilderness – but he insists that such gnosis must remain servant, never master. When it is subordinated to kherad, it becomes a gift. When it seeks supremacy, it becomes perilous. Zal is, therefore, the perpetual reminder that not all wisdom is kherad, and that not every savior is fit to be king.

The figure of Zāl is often treated as a tender paradox: a noble outcast whose whitened body marks him as liminal, rescued and instructed by the Simorgh, then reintegrated into the Iranian order as a bearer of extraordinary counsel. Yet the Shahnameh’s handling of this liminality is far less innocent than it appears. Ferdowsi simultaneously needs Zāl’s marginal wisdom and fears it; he sanctifies the Simorgh as a benevolent rescuer while treating her knowledge as perilously other. This ambivalence is not merely poetic suspense. It encodes a profound uncertainty, at the heart of the Iranian worldview, about whether the most potent forms of intelligence arise from orthodoxy or from the subterranean margins where civilization touches the wild.

In Iranian Leviathan, I emphasized that the Iranian tradition is not exhausted by the Zoroastrian or Sassanian sacerdotal order; beneath and beside it runs a Parthian–Scythian–Mithraic current in which initiation, shamanic technique, and outlaw nobility are not aberrations but the true engine of Iranian resilience. Zāl is precisely the kind of figure such a tradition would valorize without apology: a frontier aristocrat, marked by the uncanny, trained by a supra-human intelligence, and capable of strategic counsel that courtly institutions cannot generate. Ferdowsi, however, cannot fully admit what he has written. He domesticates Zāl by reinscribing him into dynastic legitimacy, as if the margin’s only value were to feed the center with occasional gifts before submitting again to the hierarchy it transcends.

The Simorgh herself is treated as an oracle who must remain ultimately non-political. Her aid is granted in moments of crisis – the saving of the infant, the birth of Rostam – but she is never allowed to become a stable institutional presence. The epic thereby prevents the most important question from being asked: why must Iran rely on eruptions of liminal intervention rather than cultivating durable structures of intelligence? Why is the deepest wisdom permitted only as miracle, not as method? In Iranian Leviathan, the answer is political: priestly and royal orders cannot tolerate a rival source of authority, especially one rooted in initiation and technique rather than law and lineage. Ferdowsi stages this rivalry, but he resolves it by containment. The Simorgh must remain “mythic” so that the court may remain “real.”

This containment has consequences. Zāl’s counsel, though often wise, becomes morally suspect precisely because it is not produced by the official metaphysical economy of farr and dād. Ferdowsi hints that such wisdom is “too perilous to be fully trusted,” as if the marginal were always one step away from sorcery. Yet this is exactly the category mistake that later enables theocratic capture: when every non-priestly intelligence is treated as suspect, the state becomes dependent on clerical legitimacy even when clerics are blind. The Iranian genius I traced historically in Iranian Leviathan survived by doing the opposite – by cultivating hidden schools, heterodox networks, and esoteric techniques as counterweights to any monopolization of truth. Zāl and the Simorgh should be read as the epic’s unconscious admission that Iran’s real strength lies in what its official order cannot authorize.

The tragedy is that Ferdowsi never allows this admission to become a principle. The Simorgh withdraws. Zāl is domesticated. The margin is mined and then sealed. What remains is an Iran that reveres the uncanny but refuses to institutionalize it, that benefits from the outsider’s wisdom but cannot grant the outsider lasting authority. In this way, the Zāl–Simorgh cycle becomes a rehearsal for the broader pattern of Iranian history wherein the most effective sources of resilience arise from below the surface, are used in moments of emergency, and are then repressed in the name of restored order – until the next catastrophe forces their return.

Rostam and Sohrab

The episode of Rostam and Sohrab is often treated as the emotional core of the Shahnameh, the supreme dramatization of fate, ignorance, and belated recognition. Yet from the standpoint developed in Iranian Leviathan, this tragedy is less a metaphysical lament than a political parable about the catastrophic cost of compartmentalized identities in a fractured civilizational order. Rostam does not kill his son because destiny is cruel; he kills him because the heroic caste has been structurally severed from dynastic continuity. The hero is rendered an instrument without lineage, a weapon without genealogy. Ferdowsi elevates this to cosmic tragedy, but he never asks why the Iranian order repeatedly produces heroes who do not know their own offspring.

The concealment of Sohrab’s identity is usually moralized as a personal failure of communication. Yet this interpretation trivializes a far deeper problem. Sohrab is the product of a borderland union, a child of Iran and Turan, of empire and periphery, of center and margin. His very existence is an indictment of a geopolitical order that refuses to integrate its frontier energies into its imperial self-understanding. In Iranian Leviathan, I argued that the Parthian genius lay precisely in exploiting liminal spaces, hybrid lineages, and frontier aristocracies as instruments of imperial survival. Ferdowsi, by contrast, converts hybridity into doom. The mixed-born hero must die so that the purity of the tragic order can be preserved.

Rostam’s ignorance is not merely personal; it is institutional. He has been trained as a weapon of the realm, not as a bearer of dynastic memory. His strength is cultivated; his consciousness is neglected. This is why the recognition comes too late. Ferdowsi presents this as the cruelty of fate, but it is in fact the cruelty of a political system that separates force from foresight, heroism from governance, arms from intelligence. The tragedy is not that Rostam is human; it is that Iran has produced a class of heroes who are structurally blind.

The sanctification of this ignorance is one of the most dangerous legacies of the epic. By aestheticizing the catastrophe, Ferdowsi turns a civilizational failure into a sacred wound. The tears of Rostam become a substitute for reform. In Iranian Leviathan, I emphasized that Iranian history survives not through noble suffering but through covert redesign.

Even more revealing is that this tragedy produces no institutional correction. No new law is founded. No new order is devised to prevent repetition. The cycle simply continues. This is the deeper pattern of the Shahnameh: catastrophe educates the heart but never reforms the system. Ferdowsi’s genius is ethical, not strategic. He teaches Iran how to feel, not how to survive. In this sense, the Rostam–Sohrab episode already announces the central limitation of the epic. It is a literature of remembrance without engineering, of conscience without counter-design. The Iranian world is invited to recognize itself in this mirror, but it is never shown how to step out of the frame.

Rostam and Esfandiyar: Tragedy of Theocratic Orthodoxy

Nowhere does Ferdowsi’s tragic metaphysic blaze more brightly than in the duel between Rostam and Esfandiyar. This is not a contest of rival heroes in the Homeric sense, where martial prowess alone decides fate. It is instead a collision of two principles: the older heroic farr embodied in Rostam, and the newly institutionalized Zoroastrian religion embodied in Esfandiyar. The result is not victory but a disaster, for Ferdowsi stages here the impossibility of reconciling gnosis, kingship, and revelation when they are conscripted to political ends.

Esfandiyar is everything that the Zoroastrian theocracy might exalt: pious, obedient to his father Kay Goshtasp, armored with invulnerability granted by Ahura Mazda, tireless in his campaign to purge the world of falsehood. He is the saintly warrior, a kind of Iranian Parsifal, and yet his very virtues are weaponized by his father’s duplicity. Goshtasp, unwilling to share power, demands that Esfandiyar prove his loyalty by compelling Rostam to submit. It is a trap because if Esfandiyar kills Rostam, he eliminates the one man who could check Goshtasp’s authority; if he dies, Goshtasp is rid of a rival son whose charisma outshines his own. Thus revelation, once embodied in Esfandiyar’s invincibility, is conscripted into the service of political manipulation.

Rostam, by contrast, is the archetype of the unordained savior. He does not sit on the throne, nor does he claim prophetic sanction. His legitimacy derives from the sheer fact of his repeated defense of Iran. Again and again, he has rescued the realm from collapse; the people recognize in him the radiance of farr, though he holds no crown. Yet this very independence marks him as intolerable to Goshtasp. He is proof that legitimacy can exist outside imperial sanction, and therefore must be destroyed or subordinated. Rostam resists not out of rebellion but out of fidelity to his own role as protector. He does not want to fight Esfandiyar; he pleads, reasons, even laments. But the machinery of theocratic kingship leaves no space for compromise.

The battle itself is freighted with ambivalence. Rostam cannot prevail against Esfandiyar by ordinary means; his strength, though superhuman, crashes futilely against divine armor. It is only through Zal’s gnosis – otherworldly insight into the paradoxical weakness hidden in the tamarisk – that Rostam finds a path. The arrow that strikes Esfandiyar is at once miraculous and illicit, a gift from liminal wisdom rather than sanctioned revelation. When Esfandiyar falls, the tragedy is double: the pious prince is slain not by hubris but by fate; the nation loses both its saint and its protector. Rostam weeps, burdened with guilt for killing one he never wished to harm. Ferdowsi lingers on these tears, insisting that this is not a triumph but a calamity.

What lesson does the poet inscribe in this blood-soaked tableau? It is that theocratic orthodoxy, when weaponized by corrupt kingship, destroys itself by forcing virtue into impossible conflict. Goshtasp’s manipulative authority reduces revelation to a tool, pits saint against hero, and in the process annihilates both. Rostam becomes the unwilling executioner of sanctity; Esfandiyar becomes the martyr of paternal deceit. The result is cosmic dissonance and the withdrawal of farr from both orders, leaving Iran bereft of its greatest protector and its most radiant saint.

In this tragic confrontation, Ferdowsi unmasks the limits of theocracy. Piety alone does not guarantee justice; obedience can be made the accomplice of injustice; and divine favor, embodied in invulnerability, can be nullified by the paradoxical wisdom of the margins. By staging the death of Esfandiyar at Rostam’s hands, Ferdowsi indicts both kingly manipulation and religious absolutism. His radical point is that revelation politicized becomes sorcery by another name, and heroes forced to oppose it become destroyers against their will. The cosmos itself breaks when the sacred is made to serve power.

The confrontation between Rostam and Esfandiyar is usually hailed as Ferdowsi’s most explicit critique of theocracy, a tragic demonstration of how politicized revelation destroys both sanctity and heroism. Yet this episode, for all its apparent radicalism, remains constrained by the same metaphysical conservatism that governs the rest of the epic. Ferdowsi indicts Goshtasp’s manipulation, but he does not indict the structural marriage of revelation and kingship that makes such manipulation inevitable. The tragedy is localized in a corrupt father rather than in the very principle of sacral sovereignty.

Esfandiyar is armored by heaven, yet he is enslaved by obedience. His invulnerability is the mark not of freedom but of total instrumentalization. He is the perfect saint for a totalitarian theology: incorruptible in body, extinguished in judgment. In Iranian Leviathan, I argued that Iranian political intelligence consistently sought to inoculate itself against precisely this fusion of piety and power. The Parthian strategy was never to enthrone revelation, but to neutralize it, to convert it into a catalyst rather than a command. Ferdowsi, however, still allows the saint to stand as a legitimate ideal, even as he stages his destruction.

Rostam, in this drama, is not the rebel but the executioner of sanctity. He kills not because he rejects theocracy, but because he is trapped between two absolutes: the command of kingship and the radiance of revelation. The hero becomes the garbage collector of a failed system, forced to resolve by violence what no institution has learned to prevent. Ferdowsi presents this as tragic necessity, but necessity here is nothing other than the absence of constitutional design.

What is most striking is that the lesson remains purely moral. We are told that revelation politicized becomes sorcery. But we are never shown how revelation might be permanently depoliticized. In Iranian Leviathan, I traced how Iranian elites attempted exactly this through esotericism, through heterodox philosophies, through the cultivation of skeptical humanism within an Islamic shell. Ferdowsi’s universe, by contrast, knows only two modes: enthroned revelation or martyred revelation. The possibility of strategic containment is absent.

The death of Esfandiyar is therefore less a critique of theocracy than a ritual purification of it. The saint dies so that the system may continue, chastened but intact. Goshtasp is condemned; kingship is not. Revelation is mourned; its political enthronement is not dismantled. The tragedy resolves itself in tears rather than in redesign.

This is the deeper pattern of Ferdowsi’s political theology. He recognizes every danger, names every inversion, exposes every corruption – yet he consistently reinscribes the same vertical architecture of authority. In this sense, the Shahnameh functions not as a manual for escaping theocratic catastrophe, but as a liturgy for enduring it with dignity.

Zartosht: Reverent Reticence and the Veil of Dād

It is one of the most striking ironies of the Shahnameh that Zarathustra or Zoroaster – Zartosht Spitaman, the prophet of Iran’s own sacred tradition – appears only in fleeting strokes. Ferdowsi, who devotes thousands of verses to kings and heroes, who lingers on the rise of tyrants and the ambiguities of rebels, names Zarathustra only briefly, almost in prose, during the reign of Kay Goshtasp. The poet does not present a theophany, nor a hymn, nor even a mythologized episode of conversion. Instead, Zartosht is introduced in the restrained language of law: he brings dād, measured order, not ecstasy. This silence is not oversight. It is deliberate. Ferdowsi cloaks the prophet in reticence precisely to preserve the sanctity of his Word from the fate that befalls every other figure in the epic: politicization, manipulation, and eventual inversion.

By veiling Zartosht in sobriety, Ferdowsi elevates him above the cycles of rise and fall. The prophet cannot be made to perform theatrically within the narrative without exposing him to the same corruptions that undo Jamshid, Zahhak, or even Esfandiyar. Instead, Zartosht remains archetypal, a silent axis around which the tragic wheel of Iranian history turns. His presence is the measure, not the action. What the Shahnameh teaches through this restraint is that revelation is not spectacle but Logos, not gnostic fire but cosmic law. Its authenticity is precisely in its refusal to dazzle; it governs by measure, not by frenzy.

The real drama unfolds not around Zartosht himself, but around his royal patron Kay Goshtasp. Here Ferdowsi shows his hand. For Goshtasp, the king who officially embraces Zoroastrianism, is portrayed as weak, scheming, and manipulative. He sacrifices his own son Esfandiyar in order to consolidate authority, conscripting the new religion into the service of dynastic politics. Thus, though Zartosht himself is treated with reverence, the theocratic order founded in his name becomes the very occasion of cosmic injustice. The prophet’s teaching is not denied, but its political incarnation is corrupted. The result is tragic: Rostam, guardian of the old heroic farr, is forced to kill Esfandiyar, the very emblem of Zoroastrian virtue. The silence around Zartosht thus becomes all the more eloquent: revelation is pure, but once weaponized by kingship, it degenerates into sorcery.

Theological minimalism here performs a metaphysical function. By refusing to poeticize Zartosht as a charismatic wonder-worker, Ferdowsi shields him from the fate of false prophets, whose rhetoric is vividly described precisely because it seduced and destabilized. Zartosht’s power lies in being contained, veiled, remembered but not dramatized. He stands as the antithesis of the magical counter-tradition – of Zahhak’s sorcery, Zal’s ambiguous gnosis. His Word is law, not spell; order, not frenzy; Logos, not charisma. But this restraint also conceals a deeper warning. By showing how quickly Goshtasp manipulates the faith for political ends, Ferdowsi makes plain that no revelation, however pure, can prevent corruption once it is fused with kingship. The danger is not in Zartosht but in the attempt to make his teaching the tool of temporal power. Thus, the reverent silence is double-edged: it both preserves the prophet’s sanctity and tacitly acknowledges that his Word, once politicized, will inevitably be inverted.

In Zartosht, then, Ferdowsi locates the axis of his entire metaphysical vision. The prophet represents order as such – dād, the just measure of being. His silence is the seal of his authenticity. Around him, the tragic cycles of hubris, sorcery, gnostic revolt, and heroic resistance all play out, measuring themselves against his Word and being found wanting. In veiling him, Ferdowsi reveals the fragility of the sacred: it must remain hidden to remain whole. Once exposed to the theater of politics, even revelation itself risks being conscripted into the service of druj.

Ferdowsi’s reticence regarding Zartosht is often praised as an act of supreme reverence, a refusal to expose revelation to the contaminations of narrative spectacle. Yet from the perspective developed in Iranian Leviathan, this silence is not merely pious restraint but a strategic omission with far-reaching consequences. By removing the prophet from the arena of history, Ferdowsi preserves the purity of revelation at the cost of rendering it politically unusable. Zartosht becomes an untouchable axis. The result is that revelation remains metaphysically sovereign even when its political embodiments are condemned.

In the Parthian and post-Parthian tradition I reconstructed in Iranian Leviathan, the genius of Iranian statecraft lay precisely in refusing to grant any revelation this inviolable status. Religions were not protected from history; they were thrown into it, bent, diluted, hybridized, and repurposed. Zoroastrianism itself was never a single orthodoxy but a contested field of priestly power, royal ideology, and heterodox resistance. Ferdowsi’s Zartosht, by contrast, floats above this struggle, immune to corruption, untouched by intrigue, sealed off from institutional analysis. In doing so, the epic evacuates the very terrain on which Iranian political intelligence historically operated.

This elevation of revelation into an unassailable Logos creates a dangerous asymmetry. Kings may fall, heroes may err, saints may perish – but revelation itself is never implicated. The source remains pure; only its vessels fail. In Iranian Leviathan, I argued that this is precisely the illusion that enables theological totalitarianism. As long as the Word is protected from critique, every political crime can be blamed on its misinterpretation rather than on its structural role. Ferdowsi, by shielding Zartosht, unwittingly preserves the metaphysical privilege that later theocracies will exploit.

The older Mithraic and shamanic strata of Iranian religion, with their emphasis on initiation, secrecy, and technique, are here subordinated to juridical order. This is a decisive shift. The Iranian tradition that survives most effectively in history is not the one that codifies itself as law, but the one that survives underground, in guilds, fraternities, heterodox philosophies, and covert networks of transmission. Ferdowsi’s Zartosht inaugurates a spiritual aristocracy without a political technology.

The real drama, as the essay rightly notes, unfolds around Goshtasp. Yet this very displacement reveals the problem. By making revelation untouchable, all critique must be directed at kings. Theology is absolved in advance. The system is thus protected from root-and-branch analysis. What collapses is always administration, never metaphysics. In Iranian Leviathan, I showed that Iranian survival depended on the opposite move: to relativize every theology, to treat every revelation as provisional, instrumental, and expendable in the service of civilizational continuity.

Ferdowsi’s reverent silence thus functions as a metaphysical quarantine. It preserves sanctity, but it disables strategy. Iran is given a sacred source, but not the tools to govern it. The prophet is saved from corruption, but the civilization is left defenseless against those who will later repressively rule in his name.

Mazdak: The Demon of Equality and the Philosopher-King’s Remedy

If Zahhak is tyranny by sorcery and Zal the liminal sage whose gnosis hovers at the edge of legitimacy, then Mazdak is the most explicitly political embodiment of what Ferdowsi regards as the “counter-tradition.” He appears not in the mythic dawn but in the historical register, during the reign of Kavad (Kay Qobad) – and yet, Ferdowsi imbues him with mythic resonance, for Mazdak is not merely a reformer; he is a false prophet whose charisma threatens to upend the cosmic balance itself. His weapon is not the black magic of Zahhak, nor the ambiguous wisdom of Zal, but the incendiary promise of equality – a doctrine that, cloaked in the language of light and justice, levels the sacred order of farr and hierarchy.

Ferdowsi grants Mazdak no small appeal. He acknowledges the social injustices that made the prophet’s message alluring: the hoarding of wealth by the elite, the suffering of the poor, the corruption of kings. Mazdak’s demand that resources and even wives be shared among all struck many as the restoration of fairness. But for Ferdowsi, this is a parody of justice, not its realization. It is a counterfeit light that inverts rather than illuminates. To abolish the differentiations that structure society is, in Ferdowsi’s metaphysics, to attack the very conditions of order itself. For just as farr distinguishes true kingship from tyranny, so too does hierarchy distinguish cosmos from chaos. Equality, imposed as absolute, is not the perfection of justice but its destruction.

What makes Mazdak especially dangerous is that his charisma masks inversion as revelation. Unlike Zahhak, whose demonic pact is grotesquely obvious, Mazdak appears as a man of God, preaching in the language of dualism and light. He deploys the same metaphysical categories as Zarathustra – asha and druj, light and darkness – but he twists them into a soteriology of leveling. In doing so, he is more subversive than the sorcerer-king. He is a counter-Zoroaster, a parody-prophet whose Word seduces not through terror but through a counterfeit promise of redemption. Ferdowsi’s disdain is sharp: to cloak envy in divine radiance, to disguise resentment as reform, is to commit metaphysical treason.

Kavad’s tolerance of Mazdak is itself a sign of regal weakness. Too desperate to consolidate power, the king embraces a doctrine that undermines kingship itself. Ferdowsi thereby links the rise of Mazdak to the same structure seen with Jamshid and Zahhak: a sovereign who fails in remembrance invites inversion into the heart of the realm. Just as Jamshid’s hubris birthed Zahhak’s tyranny, Kavad’s abdication of royal discernment opens the door for Mazdak’s gnostic demagogy. In both cases, the failure of farr invites a counterfeit order that mimics the forms of legitimacy while hollowing out their substance.

The response comes only with Anushirvan, Kavad’s son, who embodies what Ferdowsi clearly regards as the ideal of kingship: the philosopher-king. Anushirvan restores order not by reactionary repression alone, but by aligning shāhi (sovereignty) with kherad (wisdom). We are supposed to believe that he extinguishes Mazdak’s movement with both severity and discernment, showing that justice is not reducible to redistribution, nor is kingship sustained by populist zeal. Justice, in Ferdowsi’s vision, is harmonic differentiation: each class, each role, each relation rightly ordered under the radiance of farr. It is a balance of nobility and humility, authority and service, hierarchy and justice.

Mazdak’s fate thus crystallizes Ferdowsi’s ethic: counterfeit gnosis, whether in the form of sorcery, liminal wisdom, or egalitarian demagogy, always ends in tragedy. What saves Iran is never revolution but remembrance – never the conjuring of new orders ex nihilo, but the restoration of the luminous thread that binds wisdom to sovereignty. By portraying Anushirvan as the restorer, Ferdowsi underscores that true kingship must be both regal and philosophical, commanding and discerning, violent when necessary but never divorced from kherad.

In Mazdak, therefore, Ferdowsi identifies what he considers and frames to be the most insidious danger of all: the inversion of revelation into demagogy, the reduction of light to a slogan, the betrayal of order under the guise of justice. The false prophet is more dangerous than the tyrant because he cloaks inversion in radiance. Against this, only the philosopher-king can stand, for he alone joins wisdom to power in such a way that order can be restored without collapsing into tyranny or leveling into chaos.

The episode of Mazdak and Anushirvan is often read as the moment in which Ferdowsi’s political philosophy reaches its highest clarity. He thinks that egalitarian demagogy is exposed as counterfeit gnosis, and the philosopher-king emerges as the supreme corrective. Yet from the standpoint developed in Iranian Leviathan, this resolution is less a triumph of wisdom than a retreat into an increasingly untenable ideal. Anushirvan restores order not by redesigning the structure that produced Mazdak, but by violently suppressing one of its symptoms. The cycle is purified, not broken.

Mazdak is presented as the most insidious of all threats precisely because he cloaks resentment in the language of justice. This diagnosis is penetrating, but it is also incomplete. Mazdak does not arise ex nihilo. He emerges from a regime already weakened by dynastic incompetence, economic strain, and priestly ossification. His movement is not merely a metaphysical inversion; it is a socio-political reaction to a system that has lost its capacity to integrate lower strata without terror or illusion. In Iranian Leviathan, I argued that Iranian elites historically responded to such crises not by repression alone, but by engineering new forms of synthesis, new religious and philosophical inoculations that could absorb social energy without detonating the order itself. Ferdowsi’s solution is cruder: massacre and restoration. Around 100,000 Mazdakites are massacred, and their books are burned. Scaling this to the population of today, would mean that Anushirvan killed the equivalent of millions of dissident Iranian freethinkers. As for Mazdak himself, he was hung upside down and shot through with arrows.

Anushirvan, the philosopher-king, is elevated as the ideal of sovereignty wedded to wisdom – bestowed with the epithet dādgar or “the just.” By the time of Anushirvan, the Sassanian state was already structurally brittle, over-centralized, priest-ridden, and strategically blind. The philosopher-king is not the model that saved Iran; it is the image that Iran cherished while losing its empire. In Iranian Leviathan, I traced how the true survival strategy shifted away from kingship altogether, into aristocratic networks, esoteric schools, scientific circles, and covert statecraft under foreign rule. Ferdowsi’s idealization of royal wisdom thus arrives precisely at the historical moment when kingship is no longer capable of carrying Iran.

What is more troubling is that the philosopher-king becomes a metaphysical consolation. Each time the cycle produces catastrophe, Ferdowsi reassures us that somewhere, someday, a wise ruler can rethread the world. This hope substitutes for institutional memory. Instead of designing innovative and constructive social policies that prevent Mazdaks from arising, the epic teaches Iran to await Anushirvans. In doing so, it encourages a politics of entezâr (expectant awaiting) rather than a politics of social engineering.

Justice, in Ferdowsi’s vision, remains hierarchical differentiation rightly ordered under farr. This is noble, but it is also static. It presupposes a stable cosmos that can be tuned by exemplary individuals. In Iranian Leviathan, I argued that Iranian history after the Sassanids is defined by the collapse of this assumption. Power becomes dispersed, mobile, networked, hidden. The age of philosopher-kings ends; the age of invisible engineers begins. Ferdowsi writes as if the former were eternal.

The deeper danger of this section is that it completes the ethical closure of the cycle. Withdrawal produces demagogue; demagogue produces philosopher-king; philosopher-king restores harmony. The audience is invited to recognize the pattern and accept it. Yet this very recognition becomes a trap. The cycle is naturalized. History is ritualized. The possibility that the cycle itself might be the enemy is never entertained, except perhaps in those lines – toward the very end – lamenting the defeat of Iran at the hands of the Arabs: “Curses upon you, oh circling wheel of heaven – I spit upon you, curses!”

Contrary to what Ferdowsi would have us believe, Mazdak must be understood not as an isolated eccentric, nor as the inventor of some crude doctrine of social levelling, but as the culminating political expression of a far deeper current in the religious and philosophical life of Iran. What later orthodoxy branded as “Mazdakism” was, in fact, the flowering of a subterranean tradition that had long resisted the juridical hardening of Zoroastrianism under the Sassanian state. Behind Mazdak stands a more archaic and more dangerous Iran, one in which the conscience of the individual takes precedence over the commands of priests, one in which the truth of religion is not exhausted by ritual observance, and one in which the divine is not the guarantor of social hierarchy but the horizon of liberation from it. The significance of Mazdak lies precisely in the fact that he transformed this esoteric and dissident inheritance into a revolutionary force in history.

The official religion of the Sassanian Empire had, by the time of Mazdak, become a grand machinery of spiritual suffocation. What had once been the visionary teaching of Zarathustra had been overlaid with a suffocating complex of legal prescriptions, ritual puritanism, and social authoritarianism. The priesthood, in alliance with the throne and the nobility, converted religion into an instrument for the sanctification of rank, gender domination, and inherited privilege. In this distorted order, purity codes and moral prohibitions were not incidental to political power; they were its metaphysical alibi. They sacralized the existing distribution of wealth, women, land, and prestige. Orthodoxy thus became the theological mask worn by caste society.

Against this world there arose, from within Iran itself, a counter-tradition that sought to restore the primacy of inward illumination over outward law. The movement that would come to be associated with Mazdak appears to have inherited a vision in which the exoteric shell of religion is always provisional, always destined to petrify, and therefore always destined to be broken. Truth is not exhausted by dogma, because every doctrine is only a temporary crystallization of a living insight. Once it becomes rigid, once it ceases to liberate and instead begins to dominate, it must be superseded. In this perspective, prophecy is not the founding of a permanent orthodoxy but the periodic renewal of man’s relation to the divine through the destruction of dead forms.

This is why the history of Mazdakism cannot be understood apart from a revolt against moralism itself. The older Iranian spiritual imagination did not oppose a static good to a static evil in the crude fashion of later dogmatists. Rather, it discerned an agon between forces of consciousness and unconsciousness, form and chaos, luminous intelligence and dark compulsion. In that more primordial frame, evil is not merely an external adversary to be denounced by law; it is rooted in the very structure of desire, in the disorder of the soul, and even in the cosmic condition of a world that is not simply transparent to the good. The greatness of the Mazdakite insight lay in grasping that social domination and psychic bondage are reflections of the same disorder.

At the center of this diagnosis stands the problem of possessiveness. Human beings are ensnared less by pleasure as such than by the jealous appropriation of pleasure, less by material goods than by the obsession to monopolize them, less by eros than by the will to own the beloved as property. The demons that torment mankind are not abstractions floating in some theological ether; they are embodied in avarice, envy, vengeance, greed, and lust for domination. These passions crystallize most dangerously around two axes of social life: wealth and women. When either becomes an object of private hoarding, an instrument of exclusion, or the basis of status, the soul is deformed and society descends into concealed civil war. Mazdak’s doctrine was therefore not a hedonistic cult of indulgence, as hostile chroniclers and heresiarchs pretended, but an attempt to neutralize the possessive structure of desire by dissolving its institutional supports.

The communalization of property and the liberation of erotic life were meant to be weapons against the tyranny of acquisitive egoism. In this regard Mazdakism was not merely “social reform” in some banal sense. It was a spiritual technology of de-possession. To abolish monopolistic claims over wealth was to attack greed at its material root. To undo the patriarchal enclosure of women within harems and dynastic bloodlines was to strike at jealousy, hereditary arrogance, and the violent logic of masculine ownership. There were many female leaders of the Mazdakite movement. These measures scandalized the defenders of order because they threatened the very mechanisms by which aristocratic society reproduced itself. What the priesthood and nobility perceived, with perfect clarity, was that Mazdakism was not simply redistributing goods. It was dissolving the metaphysical grammar of their world.

Hence the ferocity of the reaction against it. The standard portrayal of Mazdak as a corrupter of women and a destroyer of social distinctions is itself a confession of what orthodoxy feared most. For if women were no longer treated as vessels of lineage, if inheritance ceased to define human worth, and if the distinction between noble and commoner lost its sacred aura, then the entire Sassanian order stood exposed as a contingent construction rather than a divine necessity. Mazdak’s revolution was intolerable not because it was irrational, but because it was too rational in a deeper sense insofar as it perceived that hierarchy survives by disguising organized desire as eternal law.

What is especially striking is that this Iranian communism was inseparable from a mystical anthropology. The Mazdakite does not seek justice because history will culminate in a merely economic paradise, but because the soul itself is in a long process of purification through repeated lives. One returns again and again into the world, bearing the consequences of prior ignorance and prior insight, until consciousness is gradually elevated. Heaven and hell are not remote destinations but modalities of experience generated through one’s mode of being in the world. Social forms matter because they either intensify enslavement to blind impulse or create conditions for the liberation of awareness. A just order is therefore not only politically desirable; it is spiritually medicinal.

The ethical core of this vision is astonishingly simple. One does not find in it an elaborate legal code, nor a priestly obsession with surveillance, nor an anxiety over ritual pollution. Instead one encounters something far more radical, namely a demand to live without oppressing, to love without owning, and to revere the divine without mediation by a class of sanctimonious functionaries. This is why Mazdakism appears simultaneously libertine and austere, permissive and disciplined. It permits what authoritarian morality forbids, but only because it seeks to destroy the pathological form of desire that turns enjoyment into domination. It is a liberation not of crude appetite, but of the soul from the structure of possessive compulsion.

This also explains why the movement could become politically explosive under Kavad. Once a doctrine of this kind acquires access to imperial power, it cannot remain merely contemplative. It begins to act against granaries hoarded in the midst of hunger, against closed aristocratic lineages, against the economic and sexual monopolies through which caste society secures itself. What had been an esoteric protest against spiritual corruption now became a practical assault on the social order. The opening of storehouses, the redistribution of wealth, the destabilization of inherited rank, and the challenge to patriarchal domestic arrangements were all concrete forms of metaphysical rebellion. Mazdakism was the translation of cosmology into revolution.

It is precisely for this reason that the orthodox reaction had to take the form of extermination. Debate could not suffice, because what was at stake was not an academic difference of opinion but the legitimacy of the entire Sassanian dispensation. The execution of Mazdak and the massacre of his followers was therefore an act of restoration in the most brutal sense: not only the restoration of property, but the restoration of theological fear, social distance, and masculine control. The slaughter of the Mazdakites was accompanied by the destruction of texts because the victors understood that memory itself was dangerous. They needed not merely to kill the revolutionaries, but to erase the intellectual and spiritual lineage that had made them possible.

The irony is that the regime which annihilated Mazdak in the name of order thereby revealed the truth of his indictment. A society that must preserve itself through massacre, censorship, and sacerdotal monopoly is one already inwardly rotten. It survives only by calling its own violence righteousness. The so-called defenders of the true faith showed, through their conduct, that what they truly worshipped was not wisdom but power, not truth but control. Their orthodoxy was vindicated not by insight but by bloodshed.

Mazdak endures in the Iranian imagination because he names a possibility that official history can never fully bury: the possibility that the deepest resources of Iranian civilization are not on the side of throne-and-altar despotism, but on the side of conscience, equality, erotic and spiritual freedom, and revolt against sanctified domination. He stands as the reminder that within the house of Iran there has always been another fire, one not tended by the priests of order but by those who would risk everything to transfigure life. In Mazdak, the Iranian struggle against tyranny assumed a form at once mystical and material, erotic and egalitarian, visionary and insurgent. That is why he had to be demonized, and why he still matters.

The Metaphysical Cycle: Withdrawal, Inversion, Restoration

Ferdowsi has composed not simply an epic of kings and heroes, but a metaphysical cycle, endlessly re-enacted across the mythic, heroic, and historical strata of Iranian memory. The structure is simple in outline yet profound in implication: first the withdrawal of divine radiance (farr) through hubris or negligence, then the rise of a counterfeit order in its place, and finally a restoration – whether through rebellion, heroism, or philosopher-kingship – that rethreads the world to remembrance.

By the time Ferdowsi explicitly formulates the doctrine of withdrawal, inversion, and restoration, the governing metaphysics of the Shahnameh stands fully revealed. This triadic structure is presented as a profound anthropology: the world falls by forgetting, is seized by parody, and is saved by remembrance. Yet from the perspective developed in Iranian Leviathan, this doctrine is not merely descriptive; it is performative. It does not only interpret Iranian history – it programs Iranian expectation. By encoding catastrophe as cyclical and restoration as inevitable, Ferdowsi converts history into a ritual of recurrence rather than a field of strategic intervention.

The first danger of this metaphysics is that it naturalizes inversion. Every collapse is framed as the predictable consequence of pride, every tyranny as the necessary shadow of forgotten light. Structural causes disappear into ontological allegory. Economic exhaustion, imperial overreach, priestly capture, administrative sclerosis, and geopolitical miscalculation are transfigured into metaphysical lapses. In Iranian Leviathan, I insisted that Iranian survival depended precisely on refusing this transfiguration – on reading collapse as a technical and political failure to be engineered against, not as a moral drama to be endured. Ferdowsi’s cycle trains the reader to moralize where redesign is required.

The second danger is more subtle. By insisting that every inversion summons its own restoration, the epic inoculates Iran against radical despair – but also against radical innovation. No catastrophe is final; therefore no catastrophe demands a new order. The future is always a return, never a departure. This is the metaphysical root of a culture of postponed revolution: a civilization that waits for light to return rather than building new sources of illumination.

What is conspicuously absent from this cycle is any notion of cumulative learning. Each generation repeats the same errors, each age reenacts the same drama, each restoration forgets the lessons of the last collapse. Memory exists only as remembrance of origin, not as memory of technique. The Parthian and post-Parthian tradition I reconstructed was the opposite: a culture of accumulated stratagems, of lessons encoded in institutions, guilds, sciences, and clandestine networks. Ferdowsi’s Iran remembers its myths, but forgets its methods.

This tragic spiral is, in fact, a sophisticated form of civilizational resignation. It allows dignity without escape, meaning without mastery. Humanity ascends by remembering, but it never ascends by redesigning. The cosmos is rethreaded, but the loom is never altered. In this sense, the Shahnameh offers Iran a metaphysics of endurance rather than a meta-political science of survival.

Most revealing is that this cycle mirrors the very fate of the Sassanian world that Ferdowsi elegizes. The empire collapses, memory is preserved, identity survives – but power is lost. In Iranian Leviathan, I argued that Iranian genius after the Islamic conquest consisted precisely in abandoning this tragic metaphysics and replacing it with a politics of infiltration, inoculation, and long-range subversion. Ferdowsi writes as if the highest task were to remain noble in defeat, whereas Iranian history should teach how not to be defeated again. Thus, the metaphysical cycle of the Shahnameh, for all its grandeur, becomes a prison that explains everything, and therefore transforms nothing. It consoles Iran for its losses, but it does not teach Iran how to stop losing.

To approach Nowruz merely as a cultural festivity or seasonal celebration is to remain blind to the profound metaphysical architecture that it encodes. The Iranian New Year, celebrated for at least the 2,585 years of the Imperial calendar dating back to Cyrus the Great, is nothing less than the ritual condensation of a primordial cosmology – a cyclical drama of creation, catastrophe, and renewal whose roots reach back into the deepest strata of Indo-Iranian consciousness. From the fire rites of Chaharshanbeh Suri, which preserve the archaic expulsion of demonic forces, to the vestigial echoes of Mehragân that have migrated westward into the masquerades of Halloween, we are confronted with the survival of a prehistoric ritual system that once governed the thresholds between worlds – between order and chaos, the living and the dead, the human and the divine.

At the center of this symbolic constellation stands the figure of Jamshid, not as a benign culture hero, but as the Promethean sovereign whose ascent upon a throne raised by the Daevas marks the apex of human ambition and the prelude to an imposed civilizational collapse supposedly punishing titanic hubris. In his elevation we glimpse the memory of the rise and fall of Atlantis – the cradle of the Aryans. Thus, Nowruz reveals itself as a festival of profound ambivalence: a celebration of rebirth shadowed by the memory of destruction, a reenactment of cosmic order that is inseparable from the chaos it must continually overcome.

What unfolds across the thirteen days of the Nowruz cycle – from the purifying fires to the symbolic microcosm of the Haft Sin and the final dissolution of Sizdeh Bedar – is nothing less than a dramatization of the entire arc of cosmic time. Here, the Iranian vision of existence discloses itself in its full philosophical depth: a universe perpetually oscillating between Asha and its negation, between the luminous order embodied by the Amesha Spentas and the shadowy dominion of the Daevas. Nowruz, then, is not simply the beginning of a year. It is the remembrance of the Iranian conception of the structure of Being itself – of a world that is reborn through the fire of its own destruction.

Chaharshanbeh Suri

To understand Nowruz in its full mytho-historical depth one must recognize that the Iranian New Year was never merely a calendrical convention. It was the ritual axis of a cosmological drama that unfolded across the entire cycle of the Iranian sacred year. The festival that begins with Shabé Chaharshanbeh Suri or “the Eve of Red Wednesday,” and culminates in the vernal equinox, preserves fragments of a far older system of seasonal rites whose origins reach back to the Indo-Iranian Bronze Age. Only by tracing the transformations of these rites – from the archaic Mehragân New Year of the autumn equinox to the spring festival of Nowruz – can we grasp the strange constellation of symbols that surround the Iranian New Year and the unexpected ways in which these symbols migrated westward into the ritual life of Europe.

In the most ancient stratum of the Iranian calendar, the autumn equinox festival of Mehragân appears to have held a status comparable to that later enjoyed by Nowruz. This was the feast of Mithra, the god of covenant, light, and sovereign justice. Mehragân commemorated the overthrow of Zahhak by Fereydun, a mythic event that signified the restoration of cosmic order after a period of demonic tyranny. In this sense the festival functioned as a New Year celebration in which the victory of justice over chaos inaugurated a renewed cycle of time.

Ritual practices associated with Mehragân reveal striking affinities with customs that survive today in Samhain and ultimately Halloween. Among these were the wearing of disguises, the knocking on doors for offerings, the symbolic expulsion of malevolent spirits from houses, and the ritualized inversion of ordinary social roles. Such practices were not mere amusements. They formed part of an archaic Indo-European strategy for confronting the dangerous threshold between seasons, a liminal moment when the boundary between the human world and the domain of spirits was believed to grow dangerously thin.

In the Iranian context these rites were directed against the Daevas or divs, the demonic forces of Ahriman. During the seasonal transition households engaged in elaborate rituals to cleanse their dwellings of these malign presences. Furniture and walls were struck or shaken to drive out invisible entities lurking within the domestic space. Participants sometimes covered themselves in cloth or sheets to emulate ghosts, transforming themselves into ambiguous figures that could traverse the boundary between the human and spirit worlds. Children or masked participants went door to door receiving offerings of sweets – practices whose structural similarity to later European (and by extension American) customs should be obvious.

When Mithraism gradually yielded to the theological ascendancy of Zoroastrianism, the structure of the Iranian ritual calendar was reorganized. The cosmic emphasis shifted toward the spring equinox and the festival of Nowruz, which came to symbolize the rebirth of the world after the winter of cosmic struggle. Yet the older Mehragân rites did not simply disappear. Instead, elements of them were transferred to the threshold festival that precedes Nowruz, the fire festival known as Chaharshanbeh Suri.

This remarkable celebration occurs on the eve of the final Wednesday before the New Year and retains unmistakable features of archaic spirit-expulsion rituals. The central act of leaping over fire while invoking the formula “zardi-ye man az to, sorkhi-ye to az man” expresses a symbolic exchange between the human body and the purifying flame. Illness, weakness, and misfortune are cast into the fire, while vitality and radiance are drawn from it. Fire here functions as the visible manifestation of asha, the cosmic order that burns away the forces of Ahriman.

Yet alongside this solemn symbolism survive playful customs that preserve the deeper memory of the older Mehragân rites. Participants may disguise themselves with cloth coverings, echoing the ancient practice of adopting ambiguous identities during liminal festivals. Young people engage in knocking rituals, visiting houses and receiving sweets or offerings. Objects within the household may be struck or shaken as if to drive spirits from the walls and furniture. These curious practices are vestiges of the archaic attempt to purge the domestic sphere of divs before the renewal of the world at Nowruz.

When one situates these Iranian rites within the broader Indo-European cultural sphere, the parallels become extraordinary. The Celtic festival of Samhain, which later evolved into Halloween, shares the same structural features: disguises that blur the boundary between human and spirit, visits to houses in search of offerings, and rituals intended to protect households from wandering entities during a dangerous seasonal threshold. Even the modern image of ghosts disguised in white sheets recalls the ancient practice of adopting shrouded forms that mimic the appearance of spirits themselves.

Such similarities are not accidental. They point to a shared ritual heritage rooted in the prehistoric Indo-European world. As Iranian religious ideas spread westward through the Roman Empire – particularly through the cult of Mithras, which flourished among Roman soldiers – elements of Iranian seasonal rites may have mingled with local European traditions. Over centuries these motifs were transformed, Christianized, and folklorized, eventually emerging in the familiar forms of Halloween.

The fires of Chaharshanbeh Suri burn away the lingering presence of demonic disorder so that the world may enter the New Year purified. Only after the spirits have been expelled and the household cleansed can the symbolic universe of the Haft Sin table be assembled, recreating the ordered cosmos in miniature.

Seen in this broader perspective, Nowruz is not simply the celebration of the Spring Equinox (March 19, 20, or 21). It is the final act of a ritual drama that begins with the confrontation of chaos and ends with the restoration of cosmic harmony. The fires of Chaharshanbeh Suri drive the divs from the world; the equinox restores balance between light and darkness; and the New Year dawns upon a universe that has been symbolically reborn.

Before renewal can occur, the forces of disorder must first be confronted and expelled. The flames that leap in the night before Nowruz illuminate an ancient truth – that civilization itself depends upon the perpetual struggle to maintain order against the encroaching shadows of chaos. In the flicker of those flames one may glimpse the distant ancestors of the lanterns and costumes that still appear each autumn in another part of the Indo-European world, where the memory of that same ancient struggle survives under a different name: Halloween.

The Throne of Jamshid, the Daevas, and the Amesha Spentas

The symbolism of Nowruz becomes considerably more intelligible once it is read not merely as a seasonal festival but as the ritual memory of a Promethean catastrophe at the dawn of civilization. The mythic king Jamshid, who inaugurates Nowruz by ascending into the heavens upon a radiant throne raised by the divs, is not simply a culture hero presiding over the renewal of spring. He is, rather, the Iranian archetype of the rebellious world-sovereign, a figure whose attempt to transcend the limits imposed upon humanity provokes the destruction of his own civilization.

In the Iranian epic tradition, Jamshid commands the divs – the daevas – to raise his throne into the sky. Suspended between earth and heaven, he surveys the world from a vantage point that symbolizes the apotheosis of human power. The imagery is unmistakably that of a technological or magical elevation of humanity above the natural order. The king rises like a god, enthroned in the firmament, and in that moment humanity appears to have achieved mastery over the cosmos. But this triumph is deeply ambiguous. In the revolutionary Zoroastrian reinterpretation of earlier Indo-Iranian mythology, the Daevas still worshipped by Hindus, namely the old Indo-European “gods,” such as the Olympians of the Greeks, are deceptive and sadistic archons of Ahriman opposed to the divine order of Ahura Mazda and Mithra. For Jamshid to command them to empower his ascent represents a Promethean rebellion, a moment when human sovereignty seeks to transcend the limits set by the gods. This moment is commemorated as Now-ruz or “New Day.”

This mythic pattern is strikingly parallel to the Greek story of King Atlas, the primordial sovereign of Atlantis who rebelled against the Olympian order. The Kings of Atlantis were called “the Atlas,” in reference to the titan Atlas, the brother of Prometheus, who led the Titans in a war against Olympus, and who symbolically bears the entire world – the star globe of the heavens – on his own shoulders. Plato (who was considered a member of the Order of the Magi) tells us that Atlantis attempted to extend its sovereignty over the entire world. Jamshid, whose bull-headed scepter also symbolizes the whole Earth, is a King of the World who rules from what the Avesta portrays as a central island-continent. Atlas, like Jamshid, represents an archaic form of world rulership rooted in a civilization that possessed extraordinary powers. The Olympians, led by the Ahrimanic Zeus, defeat Atlas and condemn him to bear the weight of the heavens. The rebellion of the Atlantean sovereign results in the destruction of his civilization beneath the sea.

The Iranian myth preserves a comparable narrative. Jamshid’s elevation is followed by a catastrophic fall. Having claimed divine status for himself, he loses the khvarenah, the royal glory that legitimizes his rule. The cosmic order withdraws its favor, and his world collapses into chaos. The tyrant Zahhak emerges to overthrow him, and the golden age of Jamshid comes to an end. In this sense, the myth of Jamshid encodes the memory of a lost primordial civilization – a world that possessed extraordinary knowledge and power but whose hubris provoked its annihilation. When read alongside the Greek account of Atlantis, the Iranian story suggests a shared Indo-European mythic template: an ancient technological or magical civilization that attempts to challenge the cosmic order and is destroyed as a consequence.

The symbolism of Nowruz takes on a deeper resonance in this context. The festival commemorates Jamshid’s ascent – the moment when humanity reached the height of its power. Yet it also implicitly recalls the catastrophe that followed. The celebration of renewal each spring is therefore shadowed by the memory of a lost world.

This interpretation aligns intriguingly with certain geographical traditions preserved in Iranian cosmology. The Avesta describes Airyanem Vaejeh, the primordial homeland of the Aryans, as a region that became overwhelmed by an unnatural winter sent by the forces of darkness. The land that was once fertile and habitable becomes frozen and desolate. This mythic description resembles a civilization overwhelmed by polar ice. It is most intriguing that, according to the Avesta, King Jamshid (known as Yima in Avestan) knows that the catastrophic freezing over is coming, and so he builds a vast underground city – a var – for at least some of the Aryans to survive the calamity. If one considers the possibility that Atlantis lay in what is now Antarctica – as argued by Charles Hapgood, Rand Flem-Ath, and Colin Wilson – the parallels become even more provocative. A once-temperate region transformed into an icy wasteland, a technologically advanced civilization destroyed by cosmic upheaval, and the survival of its memory in the mythic traditions of multiple Indo-European cultures – these motifs converge in a pattern that invites comparison.

Within such a framework, the ascent of Jamshid upon a throne raised by the divs might symbolize the technological prowess of this primordial civilization. The rebellion against the cosmic order would represent the moment when its rulers attempted to transcend the constraints of the natural world. The subsequent collapse of Jamshid’s reign would encode the catastrophe that destroyed that civilization and forced the survivors, namely the Aryans, to disperse across Eurasia.

Seen in this light, Nowruz becomes far more than a New Year celebration. It is the ritual remembrance of humanity’s lost golden age – and of the catastrophic hubris that brought it to an end. Each spring the festival reenacts the moment of Jamshid’s ascent, the height of human power and brilliance. But it also implicitly warns of the fall that follows when human ambition attempts to rival the gods.

This ambivalent symbolism gives Nowruz its enduring philosophical depth. The festival celebrates renewal, but it also preserves the memory of a forgotten catastrophe. It reminds humanity that civilization itself is cyclical – that golden ages rise and fall, and that the forces that elevate humanity can just as easily destroy it. In that sense, Nowruz is both a celebration of rebirth and a cautionary remembrance. It marks the beginning of a new year, but it also echoes with the distant memory of a world that once reached toward the heavens and was cast down for its audacity.

This symbolic relationship between kingship and cosmic order found monumental architectural expression in Persepolis, the ceremonial heart of the Achaemenid Empire, which is also symbolically referreed to as Takht-e-Jamshid or “the Throne of Jamshid,” namely the one raised to the heavens by the Daevas bound by the Iranian King of the World. The great terraces of Takht-e Jamshid were not merely the setting for imperial audiences; they were the stage upon which the cosmic drama of Nowruz was reenacted each year. Delegations from across the empire ascended the grand Apadana stairways bearing gifts, converging upon the throne of the Great King as if participating in a ritual ascent toward the axis of the world. The empire gathered beneath the king not only as a political entity but as a reflection of the ordered cosmos itself.

The symbolism of Nowruz, however, does not remain confined to imperial spectacle. It is reproduced on the intimate scale of the household through the arrangement of the Haft Sin or “seven s” spread, the table or altar of seven symbolic objects each standing for one of the Amesha Spentas or “bounteous immortals” that are facets or functions of Ahura Mazda, the super-intelligence of titanic wisdom that fosters and sustains the evolving cosmos. Each item on the New Year altar thus becomes a tangible symbol of a principle through which life, order, and progress are maintained.

The specific symbolism has shifted repeatedly throughout the centuries, but one interpretation of the correlation could be the following: eggs for the creative or progressive mentality (Spenta Mainyu, Sepand Minou); fire or a candle flame for cosmic order (Arta Vahishta, Ordibehesht); a mirror for the pure or best mind (Vohu Manah, Bahman) as well as a living creature (usually a goldfish) symbolizing humanity’s duty of stewardship over other forms of life lacking the same discerning intelligence; metal coins, especially bearing a monarch’s portrait, for right sovereignty (Khashatra Vairya, Shahrivar); water and garlic for wholeness and health (Haurvatat, Khordad); senjed, samanu, and vinegar for patience or serenity (Spenta Armaiti, Sepandarmad); grass or vegetation and an apple for vitality or immortality (Ameratat, Amordad). These are the powers through which Jamshid was able, by embodying them, to overpower and bind the Daevas, forcing them to help him storm heaven upon a throne that becomes a celestial conveyance.

Sizdeh Bedar

The temporal dimension of Nowruz reveals an even deeper metaphysical significance. According to the ancient Iranian conception of sacred time, the history of the world unfolds over a twelve-thousand-year cycle. The first 3,000 thousand years belong to Ahura Mazda and the uncreated archetypes of all things (farvahars). The second 3,000 years is a period of the admixture of light and darkness and the battle against Ahriman in the physical world. The third and final epoch of 3,000 years represents the era of the increasing victory of the light of Mazda and the eventual destruction of Ahriman, the Daevas, and their human minions in a global conflagration that renews the world in a perfect instantiation of archetypes. This is known as the Frashokereti or Frashgard. This cosmic cycle was symbolically represented by the twelve days of the Nowruz festival. Each day corresponds to one of the millennial epochs through which the drama of creation progresses toward its final resolution. The festival therefore compresses the entire history of the cosmos into a ritual sequence of thirteen days.

This cosmological symbolism becomes particularly striking in the significance of the thirteenth day, celebrated as Sizdeh Bedar or “thirteenth to the door.” While the first twelve days of Nowruz represent the ordered structure of cosmic time, the thirteenth day gestures toward the dissolution that lies beyond the limits of the created world. It is the return of the cosmos or Sepehr or Zurvan, the androgynous deity or Aeon of cosmic time from out of which Ahura Mazda (Ohrmazd) and Ahriman are born as primordial “twins.”

Iranians spend this day outdoors in nature to avoid ill fortune. They release the grass or Sabzeh from their Haft Sin into water, in a creek, river, or lake, after having tied blades of grass in it while making a wish for the New Year. On the surface this appears to be a simple folk practice. Yet its symbolic meaning is profound: the thirteenth day marks the moment when the cosmos dissolves back into primordial chaos before the cycle begins anew. Thus the festival of Nowruz embodies a complete metaphysical vision of time. Creation emerges from chaos, unfolds through ordered epochs, and ultimately collapses once more into the abyss from which it arose.

When viewed in this light, Nowruz stands alongside Mehragân, the autumn festival commemorating the overthrow of the tyrant Zahhak by the hero Fereydun. Together these two celebrations articulate the rhythm of Iranian mythic time. Mehragân marks the victory of justice over tyranny, while Nowruz inaugurates the rebirth of the world after order has been restored. One festival commemorates liberation; the other inaugurates renewal.

This profound cosmological symbolism explains why Nowruz has endured through the rise and fall of empires, the transformations of religion, and the upheavals of history. It is not merely a cultural custom but the ritual expression of a worldview rooted in the deepest layers of Iranian Civilization. The historical memory of lands that were once part of this civilization, and in some cases are waiting to rejoin its heart, can be seen in the celebration of the Iranian New Year from Turkey to Tajikistan and Azerbaijan to parts of Pakistan and India. Each spring, when the sun crosses the celestial threshold and the earth awakens from winter, the ancient Iranian vision of the cosmos reasserts itself. Nowruz is therefore the celebration of more than a new year. It is the remembrance of humanity’s place within the vast architecture of time that upholds a cosmic battle in which light is destined to triumph over darkness.

Article 1 – Foundational Principles

1. Unitary State. Iranshahr or Aryana Khashatra (abbreviated as “Iran”) is a single, indivisible, sovereign state. No province, district, or locality possesses any right of secession, confederation, or separate sovereignty.

2. Civilizational Continuity. The state exists to preserve and develop the Iranian civilizational field across time: its language, memory, arts, sciences, and political form.

3. No religion of State. While the philosophy of Zarathustra (Zoroaster) is recognized as the wellspring of Iranian Civilization, since personal conscience (daena) is at the core of this founding philosophical vision, the state recognizes no official religion and confers no legal status, privilege, or authority upon any religion, sect, clerical body, or sacred law.

4. The Mazdayasna Civil Ethic. The state adopts as its civic-philosophical foundation the principles of the Amesha Spentas, the chivalric (Javânmardi) values of Kherad, Âzâdegi, Âbâdsâzi, Dâd, and Daheshmandi, as well as a recognition that the purpose and historical mission of Iranshahr is to lead the world in a battle for the Ashâ of Ahura Mazda, with the help of Mithra, against the Druj of Ahriman and the Daevas.

5. Ordered Diversity. Iranshahr protects cultural variety within a single legal order. Diversity is cultivated within the boundaries that preserve unity, security, and constitutional integrity.

6. Supremacy of the Constitution. The Constitution is the supreme law. No decree, statute, council, party, militia, or office may contravene it.

7. Persian as the National Language. Persian is the national language and the language of the central state. The state of Iranshahr protects the literary and civilizational role of Persian as the common medium of national unity and civilizational endurance.

8. Protection of Local Languages and Cultures. Regional languages and cultural traditions are protected. Their teaching and cultural expression are guaranteed by law, provided that national educational standards and constitutional unity are maintained.

9. Capital and Symbols. The capital is Tehran unless changed by constitutional law. National symbols – including the flag, emblem, and anthem – shall reflect Iran’s civilizational heritage, founding principles, and national ethos.

Article II – Citizenship, Equality, and National Membership

10. Citizenship. Citizenship is a legal bond of rights and duties. No citizen may be deprived of citizenship except by final judicial judgement for fraud in naturalization.

11. Equal Civic Status. All citizens are equal before the law regardless of ancestry, language, region, sex, or personal belief.

12. Civic Loyalty. Citizenship entails loyalty to Iranshahr, constitutional unity, and territorial integrity.

13. Naturalization. Naturalization is granted by law, conditioned on civic integration, potential contributions to Iranshahr, fluency in Persian, and an oath to the Constitution.

14. Dual Allegiance. Dual citizenship may be regulated where national security requires, but no citizen may be rendered stateless.

Article III – Fundamental Rights and Liberties

15. Human Dignity. Human dignity is inviolable. No one shall be subjected to torture, degrading treatment, or forced confession.

16. Rule of Law. No punishment, restriction, or deprivation may occur without law, due process, and judicial oversight.

17. Personal Liberty. Arrest requires judicial warrant, except in immediate criminal flagrancy; detainees must be informed of charges promptly and brought before a judge within 24 hours.

18. Fair Trial. Every person has the right to a public trial, independent judges, counsel of choice, and appeal.

19. Privacy. Homes, communications, and data are inviolable. Surveillance requires judicial warrant, proportionality, and strict statutory limits.

20. Freedom of Expression. Speech, press, art, research, and scientific inquiry are free. No censorship exists except narrowly focused restrictions for direct and explicit incitement to violence, operational espionage, or coordinated secessionist sabotage under foreign direction, as defined by law and reviewed by courts.

21. Freedom of Association. Peaceful assembly and associations are protected. Armed political organizations are prohibited.

22. Freedom of Conscience. In accordance with the teachings of Zarathustra, the protection of personal conscience (daenâ) and free choice based on individual discernment is a sacrosanct constitutional duty. Belief and non-belief are equally protected, with the sole exception of any outward expression of the religion of Islam (which, for historical and cultural reasons, is classified as a paramount threat to the national security of Iran). Otherwise, the state shall neither compel faith nor penalize disbelief. No “blasphemy” law shall exist.

23. Equality of Women and Men. Full legal equality is guaranteed in civil, political, economic, and family law. No religious code may restrict bodily autonomy or civic participation.

24. Property and Enterprise. Property rights are protected. Expropriation requires law, due process, and fair compensation. The state may regulate monopoly, corruption, and foreign capture of strategic interests. Seizure of the property or assets of former officials of the Islamic Republic, or proven loyalists to that regime, in the service of the national welfare shall be an exception to this right.

25. Labor and Dignified Work. The state guarantees the right to work, to organize, to fair wages, and to safe conditions; while maintaining continuity of essential services during national emergency by lawful means.

26. Education. Education is a strategic function of national continuity. It is secular, humanistic, scientific, and meritocratic, cultivating historical literacy in Iran’s civilizational memory and the civic ethic of promoting Asha.

27. Cultural Patrimony. Iran’s archeological sites, manuscripts, languages, and cultural monuments are protected as national security assets of civilizational heritage.

28. Ecological Duty. Wildlife, land, water, and air are protected as the material basis of the Paridaeza; ecological sabotage and resource predation are crimes against the state.

Article IV – Territorial Integrity Guarantees

29. Unitary Order. Iran is governed by one constitution, one supreme judiciary, one civil and criminal code, and one national defense and foreign policy.

30. Provincial Administration. Provinces administer services and local development under national standards; they possess no independent foreign relations, armed forces, or constitutional sovereignty.

31. Secessionism as Constitutional Crime. Organized secessionist activity undertaken with foreign financing, intelligence support, or armed preparation constitutes treason, to be prosecuted under strict due process and punishable by a death sentence.

32. Ban on Ethno-State Projects. No public authority may pursue the creation of ethno-states on Iranian territory.

Article V – The Powers of the State

33. Separation, Balance, and Wise Leadership. Legislative, Executive, and Judicial powers are distinct, balanced, and mutually restrained, but an Assembly of Wise Guardians (Anjomané Negahbânâné Xeradmand) is established as the ultimate sovereign authority of the country with the leader (rahbar) of this council serving as the Shâh (or “best”) of the Shâyestegân (the Meritorious), in other words, as the Shâhanshâh of Iranshahr.

34. Integrity Mechanism. A Constitutional Court safeguards the Constitution as the immune system of the state, in consultation with the Assembly of Wise Guardians.

Article VI – The Legislature

35. National Assembly. Legislative power resides in a National Assembly elected by universal adult suffrage.

36. Senate of Continuity. A Senate represents long-term civilizational interests, strategic policy continuity, and territorial integrity. Senators are elected for longer terms and must meet higher competency and integrity standards.

37. Legislative Competence. The Assembly initiates and passes laws, budgets, and oversight measures; the Senate reviews legislation for constitutional coherence, civilizational continuity, and strategic resilience.

38. Emergency Legislation. Emergency laws require supermajorities and strict limits, and are reviewed by the Constitutional Court.

39. Transparency. Legislative debates and votes are public, except narrowly defined classified sessions on active defense or intelligence operations.

Article VII – The Executive

40. The Prime Minister. Executive authority is vested in a Prime Minister elected by the National Assembly and approved by the Assembly of Wise Guardians, serving ultimately at the discretion of the Shâhanshâh of Iranshahr – who may dismiss the Prime Minister and call for a new one to be elected by the Assembly and vetted by the Guardians.

41. National Security Council. A National Security Council coordinates defense, intelligence, cyber, and strategic industry, and maintains a close relationship with the SAVAK; its actions are reviewable under law, with classified oversight committees.

42. Civilian Control. The armed forces are under civilian constitutional authority. No militia, party army, or revolutionary guard may exist outside the unified national defense structure.

43. Anti-Corruption Duty. The Executive must maintain a permanent anti-corruption directorate with prosecutorial referral powers, audited by independent bodies.

Article VIII – The Judiciary

44. Independence. Judges are independent and may not be removed except by due process for defined misconduct.

45. Unified Courts. A unified civil and criminal judiciary replaces all clerical or religious tribunals. No parallel courts exist.

46. Constitutional Court. The Constitutional Court reviews laws, decrees, emergencies, and rights violations, with guidance from the Assembly of Wise Guardians; it may dissolve unconstitutional parties and void unconstitutional acts in consultations with, and pending approval from, the Shâhanshâh of Iranshahr.

47. Due Process in Security Cases. Even in treason, espionage, and secession cases, the state preserves due process, counsel, and judicial review; secrecy is permitted only where operationally necessary and must be narrowly tailored.

Article IX – The Assembly of Wise Guardians, Civil Service, and Meritocracy

48. The Assembly of Wise Guardians. Based on the precedents of the Order of the Magi and the Philosopher Rulership that Pythagoras and Plato advocated under ancient Iranian influence, preserved in the political philosophy of Shahab al-Din Suhrawardi, as well as the model of Key Khosrow from the Shâhnâmeh of Ferdowsi, an Assembly of Wise Guardians (Anjomané Negahbânâné Xeradmand) led by a Shâhé Shâyestegân or Shâhanshâh will be established as the ultimate sovereign and supervisory authority of Iranshahr. The members of this council must meet the following criteria:

a) Be a (non-naturalized) citizen of Iran with an Iranian birth certificate;

b) Have demonstrated, over many years, extensive knowledge of Iranian history and ideas fundamental to Iranian identity;

c) Have deep knowledge of Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics, Aesthetics, and Political Philosophy in a way that is integral, coherent, and cohesive;

d) Be familiar with fundamental leading edge ideas in the natural sciences and technological development;

e) Be familiar with fundamental and leading edge ideas in the human sciences, world history, and socio-economic development.

The permanent members of the 5-person council will appoint, by majority vote, the leader (rahbar) of the council who assumes the unenviable and burdensome responsibility of Shâhanshâh of Iranshahr for life – or until such time as this person either voluntarily retires or is declared incapacitated by the council. When there is a vacancy, the existing members will approve the appointment of new members of the council by a two-thirds majority vote. The first council will be formed as part of the establishment of this Constitution of Iranshahr as the law of the land and as the ultimate guardians of this constitutional order against all enemies foreign and domestic.

49. Meritocracy. In line with the standard established by the supremely meritocratic Assembly of Wise Guardians, recruitment and promotion in civil service, military, and state corporations shall be merit-based, exam-governed, and insulated from factional capture.

50. Ideological Vetting. No religious or ideological vetting is permitted for public office, with the sole and significant exception that no one serving in public office may be a Muslim or an adherent of any sect of the Islamic faith; otherwise, qualification will only be on the basis of constitutional loyalty, competence, and integrity.

Article X – Technology Acceleration Zones and the National Ascent

51. Strategic Doctrine of Progressive Innovation. In line with the principle of Spentâ Mainyu (the most important of the Ameshâ Spentâs), scientific progress and technological ascent is a core function of sovereignty in Iranshahr. The state shall treat science, industry, and innovation as pillars of deterrence and prosperity. Special priority shall be placed on the development of Singularity-level technologies with fundamental and broad-based application, such as Zero Point Energy (ZPE), Electrogravitics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

52. Technology Acceleration Zones (TAZ). The state shall establish Technology Acceleration Zones as chartered jurisdiction under national sovereignty, designed to compress time-to-capability in critical technologies. Significant elements of these TAZ will be autonomously managed by secure Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, as a trial for potential larger-scale application of AI in the governance of certain provinces of Iran. These systems will be carefully aligned with an Iranian ethos based on the aforementioned constitutional principles rooted in the teachings of Zarathustra (e.g., the Ameshâ Spentâs) and chivalric (Javânmardi) values such as Kherad, Âzâdegi, Âbâdsâzi, Dâd, and Daheshmandi, as well as the legal order established by the present constitution.

53. TAZ Legal Regime. Within TAZ, special regulatory frameworks may be enacted to enable rapid experimentation in energy, AI, robotics, biotech, aerospace, materials, and cyber – provided that:

a) Constitutional rights remain enforceable;

b) Labor standards remain protected;

c) National security vetting applies to sensitive technologies;

d) Courts retain jurisdiction;

e) Foreign ownership and influence are strictly bounded.

54. Biotechnological Human Enhancement. 55. Psionics, Psychedelics, and Psychotronics Research and Development. With its rich history of mystical occultism and yet as one of the world leaders in techno-scientific development (from 900 to 1100), post-Islamic Iran is well positioned lead the world in secular scientific research into the cultivation of latent human Psionic abilities (ESP, PK, etc.), explorations of the frontiers of consciousness through disciplined psychedelic experimentation, and the attendant development of Psychotronic technologies (mind-machine interfaces); this will also be state-subsidized and fostered within the TAZ, with one major benefit to the nation being its application in intelligence, defense, industrial espionage, and the fostering of innovation through psychological breakthroughs.

56. Network States and Experimental Politics. The state may license experimental civic communities (including network-state models and seastead projects) as subsidiaries of Iranian sovereignty, with charters, time limits, and constitutional review.

57. National Research Service. A National Research Service shall be created to recruit, train, and deploy scientific talent, with scholarships linked to service in strategic programs.

58. Industrial Sovereignty. Strategic sectors – defense production, energy infrastructure, telecommunications backbone, and critical minerals – are protected from foreign capture and cartelization.

Article XI – Reestablishment of the Sâzmâné Amniat va Atelââté Keshvar (SAVAK)

59. State Security and Intelligence Agency. SAVAK will be reestablished as the principal intelligence apparatus responsible for state security. It will answer directly to the Council of Wise Guardians and be under the authority of the leader of that council, namely the Shâhanshâh of Iranshahr, on the Iranian model of the chasm-o-gushé Shâh (the “eyes and ears of the king”). Conscientious objection to bearing arms may be accommodated only through non-combat national service.

82. State of Emergency. A state of emergency may be declared only for invasion, insurrection, catastrophic sabotage, or existential systemic collapse, with strict time limits and legislative renewal.

83. Irrevocable Rights. Even in an emergency, the bans on torture, extrajudicial killing, and forced confession are absolute; judicial review remains operative.

84. Anti-Coup Clause. Any attempt by armed bodies to seize power outside constitutional procedures is treason.

Article XVII – Amendments and Constitutional Permanence

85. Amendment Procedure. Amendments require supermajorities in both chambers and ratification by national referendum.

The Iranian mythological background of the Simorgh deepens this symbolism even further. As we saw, in the Shahnameh, the Simorgh is a creature of immense wisdom that dwells upon Mount Alborz and intervenes at crucial moments in the epic history of Iran. It raises the albino hero Zal and later assists Rostam with its prophetic knowledge. The bird thus functions as a guardian of civilization, a mediator between the human world and the cosmic order. Attar transforms this mythic figure into a metaphysical principle, such that the Simorgh becomes the symbol of the hidden sovereignty that underlies the multiplicity of beings.

In this sense the Simorgh also embodies a distinctly Iranian conception of kingship. The birds begin their journey in search of a shah, a king who can bring order to their chaotic assembly. What they discover, however, is that true sovereignty is not imposed from above. It arises from the self-transformation of the community itself. The Simorgh is the emergent monarch that appears when the birds transcend their petty anxieties and realize their deeper unity. Attar’s allegory thus echoes an ancient Iranian intuition that legitimate sovereignty is not merely political authority but the manifestation of cosmic order – asha – within the human world.

The structure of the seven valleys further reinforces this philosophical architecture. Each valley corresponds to a dismantling of the illusions that sustain ordinary identity. In the Valley of Quest, the seeker abandons complacency. In the Valley of Love, rational calculation collapses under the intensity of desire for the absolute. In the Valley of Knowledge, the intellect discovers the limits of its own categories. By the time the birds reach the Valley of Unity and the Valley of Bewilderment, the very distinction between subject and object has begun to dissolve. What remains at the end is a consciousness stripped of its habitual boundaries, capable of recognizing itself in the mirror of the Simorgh.

Attar’s masterpiece therefore stages a profound meditation on the relationship between individuality and totality. The birds do not lose themselves in the Simorgh in the sense of annihilation into a void. Rather, they discover that their individuality has always been a fragment of a larger reality that can only become visible when the fragments are brought into relation with one another. The Simorgh is thus both the destination of the journey and the latent truth that was present from the beginning.

Seen from this perspective, the poem anticipates philosophical ideas that would not be articulated in systematic form until centuries later. The Simorgh functions much like what Hegel would call Absolute Spirit – the realization that the ultimate reality of consciousness is the self-recognition of the whole through its parts. Yet Attar expresses this insight not through abstract dialectic but through the imagery of myth and pilgrimage. The birds’ journey dramatizes the labor through which consciousness comes to recognize its own ground.

At the same time, the Simorgh remains an irreducibly poetic symbol. It is not simply a philosophical concept disguised as a bird. It retains the numinous aura of the mythic creature that soars above the Iranian landscape. The Simorgh belongs simultaneously to the realms of epic, mysticism, and metaphysics. This polyvalence is precisely what allows Attar to compress an entire cosmology into the image of a single creature.

Ultimately, the Simorgh represents the revelation that the highest sovereignty is not external to the seeker. The divine monarch that the birds pursue across deserts and mountains is the higher form of their own collective being. In discovering this, they transcend the illusion that the sacred lies somewhere beyond the horizon of the world. The sacred is the emergent unity of awakened consciousness itself.

Attar’s poem thus stands as one of the most profound symbolic articulations of the Iranian metaphysical imagination. The Simorgh is not merely a bird, nor merely a metaphor for God. It is the image of a truth that lies at the heart of the human condition: that the ultimate reality we seek is already implicit within us, awaiting the arduous journey of transformation through which it can finally reveal itself.

Conclusion: Proposal for a New Flag

To place the Simorgh at the center of the Iranian flag would weave together several layers of civilizational memory. The bird itself reaches back to the oldest Zoroastrian and Mithraic strata of Iranian spirituality, where it mediates between heaven, water, and earth. The festival of Tirgan, wherein Iranians tie rainbow bands around their wrists and pray to Sirius for rain, evokes the celestial power of Tir that releases the cosmic waters through which life spreads across the land. The rainbow – rangin kaman – appears as the luminous bridge between these forces, the symbol of harmony arising from multiplicity. Seen in this light, the poetic phrase Khodaye rangin kaman or “the god of the rainbow” has a distinctly Iranian resonance. It evokes not only a universal image of unity in diversity but also the ancient cosmology in which the rains of Tir carry the seeds shaken loose by the Simorgh across the living world. The rainbow is the moment when these processes become visible to human eyes: the arc of colors that reveals the hidden harmony behind the natural order.

Under such a banner the Simorgh would not merely represent a mythical creature from epic poetry. She would evoke the entire cosmological vision that once animated Iranian civilization: the sense that life flourishes when diverse elements enter into balance. Just as the rainbow gathers many colors into a single arc of light, the Iranian nation gathers many peoples into a shared civilizational destiny. Persians, Kurds, Azeris, Tati and Talyshis, Lors, Baluch, Gilakis, Mazandaranis, Turcomans, Arabs and others are not fragments of a broken whole headed for deracination; they are the many colors of a single spectrum rising to defy gravity.

The Simorgh rising beneath the arc of the rangin kaman would therefore express a truth already encoded in the deepest layers of Iranian myth. The seeds of life scattered by the cosmic bird are carried across the land by the rains of Tir, and from that union emerges the flourishing diversity of the world. A nation that remembers this symbolism would understand that its strength lies precisely in the harmony of its differences. Under the wings of the Simorgh and beneath the radiant arc of the rainbow, Iran could rediscover the ancient covenant between the unity of the cosmos and the diversity of life that has always defined its civilization and that may continue to expand – not just into an open terrestrial horizon, but perhaps also into a cosmic one.

What did it mean, in the age of the Achaemenids, to call oneself a Persian? Modern scholarship too often treats this word as a geographic label or ethnic designation, as though the claim “I am a Pārsa” were merely a bureaucratic statement of origin. Yet when Darius carved these words into the living rock of Behistun at the very moment when his throne was contested, he was not identifying a birthplace; he was invoking a principle of sovereignty. The name Pārsa functioned as a political-theological formula, one that linked lineage, revelation, and imperial authority into a single structure of legitimacy.

My thesis is that Persian identity was originally constituted through an act of metaphysical separation – a decisive “cut” within the Indo-Iranian world whereby one branch of the Aryan peoples defined itself by allegiance to the ethical cosmology proclaimed by Zarathustra. The term Pārsa does not simply designate a tribe that happened to rule an empire; it names a people who understood themselves as the guardians of arta, the cosmic order of Truth, against the forces of druj, the Lie. A radical re-mapping of the religious history of East Asia is needed, one that dislodges Buddhism and Shintō from the parochial frameworks in which they are usually confined and situates them within a vast trans-Eurasian matrix of Iranian, Central Asian, and “Simorghian” culture. Zorvân is the dark metaphysical pivot around which the whole problem of Fate, Freedom, and the Iranian will to world-making turns. In Parthian-period Mithraism, Zorvân is the name of Time itself (Chronos in Greek) conceived not as a neutral parameter but as a power, a demiurgic sovereignty, a cosmic machinery that births, devours, and sentences all things. Under Hellenistic influence, the contest between Ohrmazd (Ahura Mazda) and Ahriman (Angra Mainyu) is reinterpreted as a gigantomachia governed by stellar necessity: two rival principles locked into combat as “twins born of Time,” while the twelve constellations and seven planets become the moving parts of an impersonal engine of destiny.
