The figure of Baphomet reveals a suppressed counter-tradition extending from the Knights Templar to nineteenth-century occultism. Far from being a demonic idol or a sensationalist curiosity, Baphomet emerges here as the sigil of a heretical heritage of esoteric wisdom that was violently eradicated because it threatened the theological, moral, and political monopoly of ecclesiastical power.
