The presence of Buddhism in Central Asia, in what was Eastern Iran up until 150 years ago has, until recently, been largely neglected by both scholars of Buddhism and by Iranologists – or people in the field of Iranian Studies. There is now a new focus on the cultural matrix for the rise of Buddhism in Eastern Iran, and an examination of the life of Gautama in the context of the Scythian society.
